bay from Alcatraz. I'm giving my 12 year old some oars and a boat and pointing him towards England tomorrow. This stuff is just too plain silly for words.

1. Yes it sure is terrible
when kids set goals and go for them. :sarcasm:

18. It's good as long as those were truly the kid's goals and not his parent's

or his coach's. I used to coach junior high/middle school track and every once in a while, I'd get some poor kid who was being "encouraged" a little too much by his parents. They would be terrified of having a bad race because then, they'd have to go home and explain.

I think it's great for a student to set goals and to work hard in order to achieve them, though at that age, I think it would be a little healthier for him to be playing softball in the park with his friends.

23. However, maybe the last thing he wants to do is play softball
And be on a team ... I know I've said it a few times on this thread, but I really mean it: read "Swimming to Antarctica."

4. That swim is a very...
longstanding tradition here in San Francisco -- completing it is a sign of a great deal of swiming skill and heart. Kudos to that 7 year old for such an accomplishment.

6. Why burst a childs bubble by calling it a farce?

7. Link Here - Why is it a farce?
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/11100872/

Seems awfully ambitious for a 7 year old, but he wanted to do something and his coach and parents helped him achieve it. A far cry from the average 7 year old who wants to do something, then gives up a few weeks later.

Why is it silly?

8. Maybe the original poster doesn't know the meaning of farce.
farce n. 1. A theatrical composition in which broad improbabilities of plot and characterization are used for humorous effect. 2. A ludicrous and empty show; mockery.

10. Hmm
Maybe a mockery of the prisoners who tried to escape the hellhole that was Alcatraz?

9. Congratulations to that child ...
...and to his parents for providing support and opportunity. At a time when so many young ones can't be pried from the TV, computer and game screen ... at a time when childhood obesity is reaching epidemic proportions, this is a great story.

14. Because of the age of the swimmer, I'd say yeah
From what I've read, not an easy swim even for an experienced adult.

20. The swim is an over-rated piece of cake for old folks
Jack LaLanne, shackled and manacled, towed a half ton rowboat from Alcatraz to shore in less than 90 minutes in 1974, on his sixtieth birthday.

I jest, because I have friends that have done the swim (unshakled) and are very proud of the achievement. Hats off to the young kid.

16. Considering last week's top story was "Bears eat Monkey"
Compared to that. I'd say this one's a headliner!

12. Have we become so bitter and sarcastic that we can't take joy
in the dreams of a child? There is nothing wrong with that making news. Do we really need to feed on the misery of our country every second of the day?

13. Why is this a farce? And why be snide about this kid's achievement?
Read "Swimming to Antarctica," and see how excited and enthusiastic a child can be about something like this...

I don't understand when someone has to go out of there why to knock someone down... even more so when it's a kid.

17. Thanks for the responses. I was expecting some "why rain on his parade"
comments. I say it is a farce because we do expect much more from younger children than ever before. I was pissed when the kid crashed a plane trying to set some "record" and it kills me seeing a child attempt (and set, I admit) a stunt for some "record" that should never exist. When can a parent tell a child, he is only for goodness sakes, a big fat NO.

19. he did something terrific and it chaffs your ass?
puh-leez -- we americans will really butt our noses into crap that is none of our business.

if the kid tells he wanted to do it -- and his coach and parents helped -- why not take it at face value?

do you know these people personally -- are you in posession of horror stories about his folks being nightmare stage parents?

if not -- leave them alone.

22. Read "Swimming to Antarctica"
Not every kid is goaded into stuff by his/her parents. The little girl and the plane is a very different situation than this lad.
