ALERT - Powerful GOP supporters trying to buy TWO Philadelphia papers
Edited on Mon May-22-06 10:54 AM by blm
This story just came out and I ran a quick check and they are very wealthy BUILDERS who have heavily supported the GOP, including SANTORUM. No doubt this is a move to save Santorum's seat and turn Pennsylvania red.

We need Pennsylvania folks to get on the phone and PROTEST this sale.

NEW YORK, May 22 (Reuters) - A Philadelphia investors group is seen as the front runner in an auction to buy the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News newspapers from McClatchy Co. (MNI.N: Quote, Profile, Research), the Wall Street Journal said on Monday.

...

The investors group seen in the pole position is led by advertising executive Brian Tierney and investor Bruce Toll of luxury home builders Toll Brothers Inc. (TOL.N: Quote, Profile, Research), the Journal said.

...
Bids from as many as six bidders rolled in last week for the two Philadelphia papers as part of McClatchy Co.'s planned takeover of rival publisher Knight Ridder Inc.

1. Take over the media and spew lies, deception, misdirection and
propaganda.

Hitler would be proud.

Note - I did not use the N word.

31. Brian Tierney - RW Shithead behind Inq/DN offer

Philadelphia Media Holdings, a group organized by local advertising and public relations executive Brian P. Tierney, according to a person familiar with the sale.

Although Tierney is well-known as a Republican Party activist and a spokesman for some of the Philadelphia area's largest companies and institutions including the Philadelphia Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church, he has pledged to withdraw from political activity if his group's bid is successful, and says that his partners have agreed to respect the newsroom's independence.

YEAH, RIGHT!

the inquirer has been carrying Bush's water since 2000, but the DN is a good paper and they have a liberal blog that's great, written by Will Bunch. I'll be writing letters and making calls for sure.

I'd hate to see that go. x(

3. I used to work at Knight Ridder's Real Cities...
Edited on Mon May-22-06 10:51 AM by calipendence
I wouldn't be surprised if these bums try to buy some other Pennsylvania papers from KR too...

Like Centre Daily Times in State College (Penn State University), the Times Leader in Wilkes Barre, Pittsburgh Post Gazette I don't believe is owned by KR, but I believe they are independently owned, and might be another target for these guys to have a media monopoly.

If you want a list of potentially threatened newspapers, take a look at the following page. Note that some of these papers aren't owned by Knight Ridder, just in their Real Cities network. But others like the Miami Herald, the San Jose Mercury News, are owned by them and threatened...

8. This is what really PISSES ME OFF - Dems with media connex are NOT HELPING
by letting these newspapers go straight under GOP control. The GOPs already control most broadcast media, and ALOT of print media - the Knight Ridder papers were some of the last OBJECTIVE media this country had.

WHERE are the Dem media leaders?

10. Y'know, LA is full of them - and I really believed that leveling the media
playing field is what Al Gore was working towards with his network when it first popped up. WHERE is there any LEFT or OBJECTIVE media anymore?

We are thrown a bone with AAR and told to like it because that's ALL we're getting anymore.

There will be NO MORE investigative print articles to discuss on any broadcast media, including AAR. There will only be internet articles left with LITTLE ACTUAL BUDGETS to put up solid investigations.

We are truly focked as of today, and hardly anyone is breaking a sweat over it.

13. Buying Ads, When The Other Side is Buying Whole Networks Is Like…
…bringing a water pistol to a gunfight.
…bringing a moped to a demolition derby.

What Happened to Al Gore's Network, Anyway?

We are truly focked as of today, and hardly anyone is breaking a sweat over it.

We're sweating plenty, but what can we do about it?

It's not as if any of us has a few billion lying around to buy a network.

of the newsmedia buys?

Even Ted Turner has NO INFLUENCE at all anymore, and he CREATED the international news network idea in the first place.

18. Yes.
Yucaipa Cos., Ron Burkle's investment firm, has been trying to buy the leftover union KR papers. But they're getting picked off one by one.

This is an old story, but outlines what he's trying to do:

They are buying two "infotainment" companies that sell their own
existance as the real truth, the real news, just like the
importance of their own existance sponsored this thread... infotainment.

I heard that on Cle public radio. The PD bought up the suburban Sun newspapers. Their (now retired) publisher Makaskee is the RWer who reversed the editorial board and tried to force a Bush endorsement in 2004.

30. THIS is how the RW is making their move to win in November - and most
Dems aren't even noticing.

They're keeping all the hot button issues going while quietly buying up what's left of the objective media. The Dem PARTY better MAKE THIS AN ISSUE NOW. If they don't wake up now, there IS no November strategy that can work.

35. That's too bad, blm. The Inquirer is staffed with good people.
Good media will lose doubly:

1. Without Knight-Ridder, there is one fewer voice in rapidly consolidating Corporate McPravda. That means no one will print anything that challenges what Tony Snow hallucinates.

2. The purchase of the two papers in one town inevitably leads to layoffs. Fewer reporters mean fewer stories, especially fewer stories about the Bush Crime Family.

Thank Gore for the Internets.
