Shameful! Group's efforts aim to censure Jimmy Carter
Edited on Mon May-22-06 11:20 AM by theHandpuppet
I just saw a commercial during CNN Headline News which was so outrageous that at first I thought it must be some kind of farce. But NO! Believe it or not, there is now an apparently well-funded group whose aims are to censure Jimmy Carter. This is the website that was advertized, complete with a Carter "Hall of Shame" http://censurejimmycarter.com/

This is such unmitigated, hateful bullshit I have to wonder what the motive is behind this and who is funding it!!

Edited to add: There is a link to the actual TV ad at the site.

1. I Wonder Why CNN Is Running It!
Jeez. Mark Crispin Miller couldn't get any broadcasters -- including public radio stations -- to run advertisements on his latest book on vote fraud. And these wankers can get ads on CNN bashing Carter? Now you know part of why I don't watch CNN.

Careful, that shit'll rot your brain. : )

CBS refused to sell ad time to MoveOn and the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals during the Super Bowl because the network claimed it did not accept advocacy advertising. Democracy Now! broadcasts the banned ad and a few others and hears from MoveOn's campaign director.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The New England Patriots beat the Carolina Panthers yesterday in Super Bowl XXXVIII. Millions of people around the country gathered to watch the game and see the halftime ads that feature some of the most expensive airtime of the year.

But there were two ads that nobody got to see.

CBS - which was broadcasting the Super Bowl - refused to sell ad time to two organizations: MoveOn and the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals because the network claimed it did not accept advocacy advertising.

MoveOn recently held a contest called "Bush in 30 Seconds" that asked for filmmakers to make a 30-second anti-Bush ad. More than 1100 videos were submitted. MoveOn planned to show the winning ad during the Super Bowl. PETA was planning to broadcast an ad that charged eating meat can cause impotence.

The MoveOn winner was an 18-second piece called "Child's Pay," protesting the Bush administration's creation of massive deficits while cutting taxes for the nation's wealthiest people and institutions.

8. Here's a start
Edited on Mon May-22-06 11:29 AM by Emit
Melanie Morgan is a conservative radio talk personality at radio station KSFO in San Francisco, California.

Morgan is a former television reporter and anchor before becoming a radio reporter in 1983 for San Francisco station KGO, an ABC network owned and operated station. While at KGO, she also covered news for ABC's national radio and TV networks. She visited Beirut, Lebanon for three weeks in 1983 to cover the U.S. Marine barracks bombing in Beirut, Lebanon. She also covered Mexico City's devastating earthquake of 1988 and the 1989 uprising in Tiananmen Square in China.

In 1990, Morgan resigned at KGO and moved to Seattle where her husband, Jack Swanson, had taken a job as General Manager for King AM & FM. While in Seattle, according to a report that aired in May 2000 on CBS News, she became addicted to gambling. "I felt totally comfortable behind a poker table," she told interviewer Troy Roberts. "I could just get high off the cards. ... On the credit cards, I probably ran up $ 25,000. ... And that doesn't count the cash that I was going through either." The gambling continued after she became pregnant, "I ended up going into labor early," she said. "Of course, I was in a terrible environment, smoke-filled room, hardly taking care of myself. Yeah, I was gambling right up until an hour before I gave birth." After her son was born, her gambling obsession led her to neglect the child, requiring an informal intervention by Child Protective Services. After counseling and sessions with Gamblers Anonymous, she says she was able to stop gambling in 1992, and in 1999 she became president of the California Council on Problem Gambling. She has not placed a bet in 13 years.

In the 1990s, Morgan returned to San Francisco and began working for KSFO, where she became an opinionated right-winger. She was active in the campaign to recall Democratic Governor Gray Davis and helped launch Move America Forward, a conservative response to MoveOn.org. She has spoken out against Michael Moore's movie, Fahrenheit 9/11, and has appeared as a commentator on Fox News, CNN, NPR, and been quoted in dozens of international publications as well as been the focus of a BBC report called "Radio Rage."

Edited to add:

Chairman of Move America Forward: "Move America Forward is a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization committed to supporting America’s efforts to defeat terrorism and supporting the brave men and women of our Armed Forces."

Melanie Morgan has established herself as one of the leading conservative voices in the nation. Every morning Morgan shows off her intellect and wit as the co-host of one of San Francisco’s top-rated drive time radio shows, “The Lee Rodgers and Melanie Morgan Show” on KSFO 560 AM.

Morgan has attracted a huge fan base over the course of her career as a television and radio reporter and commentator. She excels as much more than an entertainer, seeing her true mission being to inform and motivate. Melanie has been a leader for countless crusades that have left lasting changes on the political landscape.

Melanie Morgan has been a leader in the “Support the Troops” effort, speaking out against the anti-war and “Bash America” crowd and she has rallied thousands upon thousands of Americans to support the War on Terrorism, the U.S. Military and the men and women of the armed forces.

It’s because of Melanie Morgan’s leadership, resolve and passion that California reversed itself and ended use of the carcinogenic MTBE (which had been added to California gasoline at the insistence of environmentalists). When President Clinton engaged in a series of criminal acts and then tried to use his Administration to cover it up, Morgan rose up and led thousands to the streets to demand Clinton’s impeachment.

can't control her own behavior and therefore thinks it best to put the government in charge of all of our lives.

The Carter censure idea is just stupid. I'm sure she is simply trying to get publicity for herself. It must be tough on the RW loonies now that Bush compares so unfavorably to Clinton. They have to take the time machine back to the 70s and hope people won't remember that Carter had a plan to keep us out of the mess we're in now.

10. Here's the scoop on Melanie Morgan
From a quick Google search: http://www.moveamericaforward.org/

(excerpt)
Move America Forward is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to preserving our American heritage of freedom and liberty.

The organization was formed in early 2004 by The Honorable Howard Kaloogian (R-California 1994-2000) and acclaimed radio and television personality, Melanie Morgan (KSFO 560 AM -- San Francisco).

Kaloogian and Morgan began working together during the Recall Gray Davis movement in California. Kaloogian was Chairman of the Recall Gray Davis Committee and Morgan launched the recall movement on her morning radio show, earning her the title of "Mother of the Recall."

Since then the duo has fought the liberal news media's attack on President Ronald Reagan's legacy via the Defend Reagan Committee and the efforts to undermine support for our troops and the fight against terrorism by the "Blame America First" crowd...

Much more....

MAF: Republican Shills

Move America Forward ( the Hate crowd ) was outed today by Keith Olbermann
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9073789/

...as having been launched by a Sacramento P.R. firm which has strong ties to the Republican party. Later in the segment Dana Milbank said that they were part of the Orin Hatch for President campaign. lol That's grassroots for you. This diary at Kos was the first one that I found which uncovered the scam.

Meanwhile, there is the group that reversed the Sheehan equation and showed up in her home town of Vacaville, California, with a caravan of military families and conservative activists who proclaimed, “You don‘t speak for me, Cindy.”

Several partisan Web sites reported that the anti-antiwar group Move America Forward was not quite as grassrootsy a response to Sheehan as it first seemed, that it had, in fact, been launched by a Sacramento public relations firm with strong connections to the Republican Party.

Those Web sites are right. While the online evidence has been scrubbed that the PR firm Russo, Marsh, and Rogers actually put up the Move America Forward Web site, Move America Forward still lists as its chief strategist and one of its board members Sal Russo of the PR firm Russo, Marsh, and Rogers.

And the Move America Forward fax number in that area code is 441-6057, while the Russo, Marsh, and Rogers fax number in that area code is 441-6057.

Let‘s call in Dana Milbank, national political reporter of “The Washington Post.”

23. From the landing page of that rag of a web site....
These parents know their children did not die in vain, they know that their children stand as heroes who helped secure a future for generations to come that will not include the threat of terrorist attacks like we saw on September 11th, 2001.

You can imagine how painful it is for these Gold Star mothers and fathers to endure the constant negativity from the news media about the war in Iraq and the efforts by some in this country to undermine the mission that our troops are serving.

Constant negativity from the media?

How about facing the truth and a few facts instead of lining up behind lies and denial?

These parent don't grieve because of what the media reports. They grieve for their losses.

This pandering and deflecting a parents pain from a very real and true loss will prolong if not stagnate the grieving process. It will focus the pain and frustration they experience from a loss of a cherished child onto a place where it does not belong. This will short ciruit the healing process.

32. More on Russo
Bill Berkovwitz's research on MediaTransparency.com that documents the sleazy history of his PR firm, Russo, Marsh & Rogers, which includes coordinating smear campaigns against Barbara Lee, Michael Moore and Dick Durbin, and the media blitz in favor of Prop 209 outlawing state affirmative action programs. Berkowitz also ties Russo to the front group a la Swiftboat Vets that is heading the anti-Sheehan offensive, Move America Forward:

The "Truth Tour" -- a seven-day carefully calibrated trip to Iraq by a group of conservative talk-show hosts -- was intended to spread the "good" news about what is happening on the ground. The tour was organized by Move America Forward (MAF - website), an organization that, according to the Washington Post, owes much of its existence to the good offices of Russo Marsh & Rogers.

SpinWatch reported that the "Truth Tour" was also in part sponsored by "the newly created Office of Media Outreach, a taxpayer-funded publicity arm of the Department of Defense."

According to an entry at SourceWatch, a project of the Center for Media & Democracy (website), in June 2004, RM&R "formed a front organization called Move America Forward… 'to stand up and support the brave men and women of our Armed Forces.'" Sal Russo, who began his political career as a special assistant to then-California Governor Ronald Reagan in the late 1960s and who later founded his own political consulting firm called California Capitol Consultants in 1976, is a member of Move America Forward's board of directors and is listed as "Chief Strategist" at the MAF web site. ...

28. I knew the right was insane when I figured out they hated Carter
I worked with a right wing nut, I thought I might try to have a conversation with her. It basically ended with me screaming "shut the fu.. up" but that was after her screaming (in a restaurant, I screamed only when we were walking on the street) "I HATE CARTER" over and over. I asked why, she said he was behind thetaking of hostages in Iran (yeah, she believed he MHOP). After trying to understand, I said: we need to change the subject and talk about something else. I changed the subject half a dozen times. She was absolutely crazed about it.

Now, I can see hating an effective president like Clinton or FDR (they drive the right insane) but Carter? Hell, he didn't even DO anything they might be against.

I knew then (this was years ago) there are some on the right you can't talk to because they live in a parallel universe. They make up the facts that support that universe. (BTW, the woman is a lawyer so she should know better.)

34. I know someone just like her!
She used to drive me nuts, always spewing out the far right's lies and hatred and there was just no way to ever reason with her. I didn't even try to change her mind about some of the things she believed. I just tried to have a rational discussion but it was impossible. One day I realized that she was just crazy and that is all there was to it, and I couldn't hold an intelligent conversation with a crazy person. So I told her that I would no longer talk to her about issues of substance, especially those political in nature, until she brought me a note from her doctor that she had successfully received a frontal lobotomy. She called me a liberal asshole and walked out.

41. the GOP myth that has done the most damage, IMO, is the "liberal" media
When you show them facts as reported anywhere, they say the liberal media lies so the facts are not true.

I swear, these people would think Bush was brilliant for coming up with a solution to all the world's problems if they saw him eat a white baby live on TV. Can't you just hear them? ("you people don't get it! 9/11 changed everything! We're going to have to eat babies if we want to be safe. You are all just a bunch of Bush haters.")

29. Well, they already managed to get Clinton impeached
Carter's just next down the list of Democratic Presidents still living.

It would be nice if this backfires and exposes them as the be hateful partisan zealots they are. And with the Cons in such low esteem these days, they might just swing the House AND Senate to the Democrats! Keep it up you crazy Melanie Morgan Morans!!!

40. The thing is, Congress isn't going
to censure Carter. He isn't President anymore. Congress has no jurisdiction over what a private citizen does, even an ex-President. If they could censure, then, hell, why not reach back in history and start going after dead Presidents that piss somebody off?

52. Actually they could.
Censure as I understand it is simply Congress saying You've been bad, stop it. Congress has jurisdiction over all citizens, they pass bill and it's signed by the President, and bingo people are jailed.

They won't because they would look silly, oh, nevermind.

53. That's not the way I understand it.

Where in here does it say anything about private citizens? When I was in school, I was taught that censure existed as a way for the government to discipline itself, as in presidential and congressional censure - not censure of private citizens.

Edited to add that Wikipedia gives this definition of "Censure in the United States":

Censure is a congressional procedure for publicly reprimanding the President of the United States, a member of Congress or a judge for inappropriate behavior.

Again, where does it mention private citizens? Can you produce any instance of a private citizen ever being censured by the United States Congress in the entire history of the country?

56. They can't pass a retroactive law
They are called bills of attainer, IIRC, and are illegal under the constitution.

Then again, they could act like W and ignore the constitution.

30. Jimmy Carter is one of my heroes.
He is a man of unquestionable integrity. I have never met the man, yet through his words and his tireless work he has helped to teach me how to be a more decent human being. I can't think of any public figures today who have done more worldwide to help people and foster peace than this man.

Regardless of one's political ideology, whether you agree with all of his opinions or philosophies, he is a man who is deserving of everyone's respect, not the hate that these people are showing.

This just makes me sad, that's all.

35. So its cool for Rummy, just before being Def Sec. as a bizman to do
business with North Korea - which involved sales of technology for nuke energy, which leads to materials that can be used for nukes... now that was okay... but Carter makes speeches in these countries... now that is Bad.

Its okay that Halliburton, while under Cheney - bought a foreign subsidiary which had a huge asbestoes liability (so folks couldn't understand why he approved its acquisition beyond incompetence until they learned...) which was then used to skirt US sanctions and do business with Saddam Hussien to help REBUILD THEIR OIL INFRASTRUCTURE (re: help Saddam rebuild his means for making MONEY and repressing his people)... but Carter makes a speech in Cuba ... and it is Carter that is bad...

Shall I go on with the ridiculousness?

36. No surprise
Clinton is now buds with GHWB which takes the hate edge off him... they need a new scapegoat on which to blame GWB's asinine mistakes or to hold up with their neener needer attitude... well, look what Carter did! It's sort of like how the GOP is so down on Venezuelan oil, which is in abundance... The Bush's are in bed with the Arabs so we have to fight for that particular oil.

39. Outrageous. I hope someone starts a thank you President Carter movement.
Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize.

President Carter is one of 3 US Presidents to win it.

Theodore Roosevelt 1906
Woodrow Wilson 1919
Jimmy Carter 2002

Jimmy Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 "for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development."

48. Carter was the first victim of the VRWC (SwiftBoats)
The Democrats should resurrect the Presidency of JCarter, and POINT OUT that had the US followed his Environmental and Energy Policies, we wouldn't be in the situation we are today. We would be Energy Independent.

The Democrats could use the Carter Policies to highlight the FAILURE of the Reagan admoinistration and Conservatism in general.

51. I Agree!
I remember when there were solar panels on rooftops here in Arizona because of President Carter's initiatives. Unfortunately, Ronald Reagan rescinded the tax credits given for installing them, and they have virtually disappeared. Of course, because of the republican's efforts, little has been done in real research and development of this promising, even life saving technology. It's just really sad to think about that when we see the mess we are in today.

66. Is Move America Forward the most anti-American group around or what?
I can't help but equate these idiots with Al Qaeda. Just change the language in this commercial to Arabic, and voila, its an ad directly from bin Laden's cave. It's really that hateful and anti-American.

The thing is, if the commercial was about Bill Clinton, it'd actually be expected from these Rove-blowing corporate hate-zealots and I wouldn't have batted an eye.

But this one? Impeach Jimmy Carter?

Straight out of left field. I literally found myself laughing at the end of this shit when I saw it on CNN earlier. I'm sure the idea is either to turn attention away from censuring Bush (although bringing the word "censure" against a FORMER president is sure to bring up calls for censure of the current president, if anything), OR to get rid of half of America's potential Democrat voters by blowing their minds -- literally.
