Letterman turning hard left (Dix Chix tonight)
Letterman has been having a steady stream of liberal guests and he has been throttling BushCo on a regular basis. He has the Dixie Chicks on tonight with Martha Stewart, and Bill Maher is on Friday. Every night, he runs a clip of * screwing up the english language and he has assailed Darth Cheney like a (cough, cough) sitting duck. Letterman has made his conservative guests squirm (can't remember the one he nailed last week) and not long ago, he exposed Bill O'Leily as the FRAUD that he is.

About 2 years back, when the WH attacked him with a press release, he called them "liars" in a bold, full front camera shot, and he has let it be known he will not be intimidated. All in all, he is making an active an ongoing statement for the good guys. Show support by watching.

2. she was the one (RW) squirming.
She is so entrenched in denial, that she didn't really get it, but he didn't let her off easy. It was not PR punch for her cause.

... I walk by them at the book store... I know it's childish and doesn't do much good, but it feels so good... ;)

And sure enough, it made me laugh to know that little liberal elves had been at work reshelving the books that needed to be reclassified as humor.

31. That's great, that gives me an idea... Instead of turning books

over, I think I'll move all the Chimp and croonies books to the "Alternate Lifestyle" section... Except off course for Mary's, although I'm sure she doesn't have too many friends in the gay community... You know, since she's done so much to further gay causes... Psshhhtttt....

Hey, it's the small things that make me happy now... :)

46. I take the "New Book!" sticker off of Savage & Coutler
where they get a lot of attention, and reshelve them in fiction. Or in a non-fiction section that isn't likely to get much attention, like books on Macrame or on Typewriter Repair.

6. she looked silly to me
Making a big deal about how she opposed a "marriage amendment" and then supporting the people that were pushing it because they were "better in the war on terror", by what measure they are better, I have no idea. He kept asking her to explain how she could support them when they were doing something she was so against and she kept ducking the question.

42. Yeah, she said she didn't have the luxury of being a single-issue voter
yet she justified her support of the bush admin with the single-issue of 'terror.' I won't even begin to argue with her premise that bush is better on terror than kerry...

12. Turning a hard left? No, I disagree
"Left-wing" implies calling for things like a socialism-based economy or turning Che Guevera into an object of hero-worship. Natalie Maines' comments on Bush don't make her left-wing; they simply make her an American (in the traditional sense) who correctly determined that a politician (Bush) was nothing more than a dangerous demagogue leading us into a wrongheaded war.

Likewise, Letterman is just letting everyone know that he sees past Bush's B.S. Nothing more.

Emma Goldman was radical. Mother Jones was radical. Natalie Maines? Not so much.

I am sick of the continual rightward trend of the political 'center'.

You have the perspective exactly correct IMO. It may not be best to promote his fairness & unwillingness to be intimidated as a "hard left" turn. It almost sounds Freeper-like.

18. In the context of the stifled masses on TV, he is making a very left
statement. The late show(s) have always made fun of politicians, but have made it a point NOT to make political statements. Letterman is.

It's all relative, I guess. But it's good the Cause.

39. Letterman is just injecting a dose of reality.
Hate for it to be just a post that says "agree with parent" but ... I agree with the parent post here. We've been so brainwashed by the mainstream media these days that apparently any dissent with the government is seen as treachery and as being 'UnAmerican'. Well, I'm not an American (yet) so the UnAmerican label you can stick on me all you like. But treachery? Nope... I'm just exercising some rights that some Americans fail to execute regularly. You'll find it in the First Amendment.

Mark.

21. When did speaking our minds or being honest become "HARD LEFT"
The Republicans certainly want to paint anyone who disagrees with them as "HARD LEFT", but I hope you won't buy the lies.

The "hard left" doesnt bother me in meaning, but it does bother me in it's design by power abusers who own the media themselves to demonize and ostracize those who tell the truth.

Its implied as if being a liberal or left by telling the truth, its a negative thing. The left and/or the right, certainly* has nothing to do with being honest or truthful, they are both merely labels most often used to divide and distract from effective progress and connection with others.

They are labels designed to isolate people and any label used in that manner is wrong.

There is nothing "hard right" or "hard left" about being honest and willing to say what we feel.

Being honest and courageous are just what they are.

29. "Hard left" is not a criticism, as far as I’m concerned.
If anyone asks me my political affiliation, I say that I’m “an unapologetic Liberal.” And while this may represent horror and dismay to RW’ers, it’s a badge of honor for me. Just because you’re simply being honest, doesn’t mean your’re not a Leftie. To me, they’re one and the same in MOST cases.

For Letterman, “hard left” IMO means taking a strong position—an active role with an obvious intent—in representing his views on his show. I didn’t mean to imply that “hard” meant extremist. Dave’s choice of guests and his interview tactics are anything but subtle, and that’s all I meant by “hard left.” It certainly wasn’t mean to look like a smear—I was just paying tribute to a guy with guts and conviction on a major network.

Take it as a compliment.

Dave went to the ME to spend a few days with the troops. No fanfare, no grandstanding, no publicity. He let several say hello to their loved ones back home on the show. That's the kind of guy Dave is.

You think a RW asshole like Limbore would do that? Not a chance in hell.

44. I've been watching Dave since 1983

Mr. Letterman is not to be underestimated.

People appreciated his first appearance after Sept. 11, I recall.

I see him as one of those old-school Great Americans, to whom integrity is not merely an empty word.
No matter how irreverent Dave's humour, it always springs from a deep moral foundation.
His values are always discreetly on display: getting his staff members bonus camera time; honouring his mother (frequently); the tenor of his jokes. He often tends to deflate the powerful and famous, while lifting up ordinary people like Rupert G or members of the audience. It's the opposite of all those star-gazing etalk daily type shows.

Maybe it seems silly to give so much weight to a late-night entertainer, but from my outside-of-America perspective, right now about the only Americans we non-Americans can admire are special prosecutors and comedians. (or fictional entities like Gil Grissom and Det. Robert Goren)
Sad but true.

Should be interesting. I know Maher an Dave have similar feelings where Boosh is concerned.
