Honey. We're Killing the Kids

Cathy Arnst

Warning, Will Robinson! After all the blog posts here in recent weeks about the dangers of TV, I'm about to recommend a TV show. Honey, We're Killing the Kids is on Mondays at 9 pm EST on The Learning Channel (a cable network that is an offshoot of The Discovery Channel ). Each one-hour epidosde of this eye-opening new reality show, modeled after a British series, focuses on the dreadful lifestyles of a different family. With the help of a nutrition expert they are given three weeks to shape up, literally. The best part: each week, the parents are convinced to get on board after being shown a computer simulated projection of what their kids will look like at age 40 if they continue their current eating and activity habits. Scary, and very motivating.

My complaint about most reality shows is that the families profiled are so beyond the pale that it is easy to feel superior. This show is no different, and yet...I bet most of us will recognize some behavior of each family that we can relate to. So check it out, and let us know what you thought of it.

1. great show
My BF and I are in a major fitness rush right now because we have a wedding to attend in October, and one of the things that show has shown us is just how many thing HFCs are in.

We cut out most of what we eat that has HFCs, and we're already on the road to losing weight and shaping up

2. I can't stand the woman who does this show.
I think the premise of the program is great and giving parents a look at what is down the road is really eye opening.

I prefer the show that comes on afterward, Shalom in the Home. I think the rabbi really does care about helping people.

5. Some of the show is too drastic
I mean, if you have lived on a diet of sugar for the first ten years of your life, and suddenly you cut all of it out and can have only healthy food one day, it's too overwhelming I think. One episode I watched had a woman quit both coffee and cigarettes cold turkey, overnight. Then they seemed surprised when she became a raving b*tch. People who don't gradually work into something they can live with are just going to get frustrated and give up. but, I'm glad the show is talking about how crazy some people are with their eating habits.

8. Yep.. I asked her what on earth was in that bottle in the fridge
and that was her answer.. She actually said that the "bubbles" helped his digestion :eyes:

The sad part of the story?

By the time he was 3 , she had to buy him size 6-Husky jeans and cut a foot off the legs to fit him.. MY son was weariing 3 super-slims and could run circles around her little boy..

her son grew up to be a fat kid, and as far as I know, a fat adult..:(
