The first word out of Liberman's mouth was Lamont wants to buy election
Foes Clash Over Cash

Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman left no doubt Monday he will make anti-war challenger Ned Lamont's personal fortune an issue with voters, now that Lamont has upped his personal investment in the campaign to $1 million.

. . .

"We started nearly $5 million behind an 18-year incumbent," Lamont said in a statement e-mailed to reporters. "My contribution amplifies the voices of thousands of our supporters who want to change our priorities in Washington." His campaign has received $50,000 in unsolicited contribution over the Internet since the vote Friday, a spokesman said.

Lamont, founder of a cable-television company and the great-grandson of a banker who built the J.P. Morgan financial empire, has a net worth between $90 million and $300 million, based on financial disclosure statements recently filed with the Senate. Lieberman's net worth is no more than $940,000, based on his financial disclosure statement.

Lieberman said Lamont is rich enough to try to buy his way into the Senate. "Having between $90 million and $300 million, Ned Lamont can not only try to buy a seat from Connecticut in the U.S. Senate, he can probably buy a seat in a couple of other states if he wanted," Lieberman said.

Tom Swan, Lamont's campaign manager, said his candidate is not taking special-interest money, unlike Lieberman.

"The additional $500,000 is still way less money than what Joe Lieberman has raised from Washington, D.C., special interests," Swan said. "It's not in Joe Lieberman's interest to make an issue of sources of campaign contributions."

1. Lamont only wants to buy the Senate seat for the people of Connecticut
Lieberman seems to think the CT Senate seat belongs to neoconservative think tanks, defense contractors and oil companies.

2. Ooh, "going negative"
What a refreshing break in character for Joe. He shoulda tried it on Republicans once in a while. Like say, maybe.... against DICK FUCKING CHENEY IN 2000!!

5. Darn right.
You got to admit Lamont's campaign manager appears to be a good fighter. Always good with a very quick and to the point response. He doesn't give Joementum an inch.

11. I've never seen Lieberman go negative against *any* Republican.
I have seen him go negative against *many* Democrats.

13. Yup
Not since Weicker, he was pretty hardknuckle in that fight. Which is funny, it probably wasn't even necessary, what with state Republicans and plenty of nationals like William Buckley throwing their weight behind Joe.

Old Smokin' Joe discovered it was boffo business laying the hammer on Democrats when he took a poke at Clinton. Guess he liked preening with the media-awarded title of "Conscience of the Senate" so much, he couldn't help but be "conscionable" more often.

4. So, Joementum acknowledges that he has a legitimate challenger
in the primary. Interesting.

That Lie berman is going negative is no surprise. That he is noticing the challenger is. Very interesting, in fact.

6. Good point. Very good point
He just gave Ned Lamont some free print. And in the article Lamont came off much better than Lieberman.

8. What a scum
Lieberman has been shilling for the debt/finance and insurance industry for years- helping to ensure that they're both unregulated and deregulated- and the guy has the GALL to talk about buying a Senate seat.

Connecticut Dems- send simpering Republican enabler packing.

12. I always hate when they say.....
"has between 90 million and 300 million", what is it really. It's a big gap between those two figures. The difference between the two is Lieberman will let others buy his seat to the senate. With all that money Lamont doesn't have to be bought by special interest groups.

14. Exactly...
wouldn't you rather have a Senator who is independantly wealthy, instead of a Senator who is beholden to the credit card and insurance companies for donations?

Sid
