Question: Google Earth- How old is that shit?
A friend sent me a photo of my house in Florida, so I downloaded the program, and the view is at least 3 1/2 years old. I've been here that long, and it shows the previous owners motor home and boat in the driveway. No sign of a 500 house developement a half mile north of me, that's been there for 2 years.

And I went to my old neighborhood in Cleveland, and the huge Sysco warehouse they built a block away a couple of years ago is nowhere to be seen.

Anybody have a clue?

2. It varies I think.
Not every map is the same age.

4. I think you're right. I've looked at a lot of different places, and
not only do the age of the pics differ, but some are very clear and some are really bad. I don't know a lot about specific satellites, but it looks like they use one satellite and is takes a long time to cover everywhere.

9. Not satellites
The high-res, color, urban images are from aircraft.

3. I think that more highly populated areas...
...are updated more frequently than lower population ones.

Microsoft's equivalent mapping software is even older. Late last year, it emerged that Apple Computer's headquarters in Cupertino CA didn't appear on the map. That meant the map was from earlier than 1995.

6. I tried to zero in on my parents new place in SC
And I couldnt bring anything into focus below 30,000 ft. I could get within a couple of hundred feet at my place.

8. Yeah, the resolutions vary depending on habitation...
...density too. My mother-in-law's place in rural England is just a tiny low res dot, but you can practically count the roof tiles on my old house in London. Also, some other regions outside of the US get even poorer coverage, because the satellites don't bother to photograph them all that frequently (Africa is a good example).

5. The most recent images I've found are from 2002/2003 most are earlier

That is for all the major players that are using the old iconos sat images. A couple of players have their own sats up now and will snap a "current" picture for a fee.

7. Another thing I noticed was you could view congressional district lines,
And in Florida, they were pre-2002, pre re-districting lines.

10. Go to the Layers window, and scroll down to the bottom.
The DG Coverage lists 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 & 2006. These will tell you the exact date the pics were taken. If its not listed, then its older.

11. Check out Davis Monthan AFB in Arizona
There must be $200BB worth of of aircraft parked there.

Other intereting places-

Iraq....check out Saddam's Palaces
Egypt...the Pyramids and other desert artifacts
Pearl Harbor - you can see the Arizona underwater
NYC is hi res, too.

I've burned hours cruising around the world with this, very interesting database...

12. How about that Maxim Pinup
Right inside the Nevada state border just off I15 Maxim magazine laid out a 75-by-110-foot billboard featuring its cover image of Eva Longoria that could be seen from space.
