Jeffeson raid, Hastert and GOP outrage....
let me begin by saying if Jefferson is guilty then lock him up and throw away the key. A video tape of him taking $100k and $90k in his freezer is pretty incriminating - by the way where's the other $10k?

there are a few things that have me a bit bothered with the raid on Jefferson's office - it's not that it was raided by the FBI with a LEGAL WARRANT (something we aren't afforded when the bushies 'monitor' our telephones)

what bother's me is the repubs response - given the current number of GOPers indicted, under investigation for various scandals, you would think the GOP choir would be out there singing "Dems are just as crooked as we are" or "We're not the only crooks" or something to that effect.

but no - they are upset about the RAID and although they are not flocking to defend Jefferson - they are also not condeming him.

So what about the raid? it was with a LEGAL WARRANT. This is the law, and the repubs, who are ohhh so respectful of the law and personal responsibility really shouldn't have a problem.

ok - so today we hear Hastert wants the DOCUMENTS taken during the raid to be returned. HUH? Bohner jumped in on it too - "predicting" this will end up in the Supreme Court....

so what am I missing? The FBI executes a LEGAL WARRANT, and grabs some documents all in accordance with their investigations.

WHY are the repubs up in arms, why does Hastert want the Documents returned? and to get tp the point - WHAT'S IN THE DOCUMENTS that has Hastert's boxers in a bunch?

The key to this is the documents - what's in there and how does it effect the repubs? Will we be seeing a frog parade in the near future?

If the documents are ever released (or leaked) what would they show? names? Dates? $$-paid? How widespread is this? Just limited to congress or higher? Follow the money into the oval office?

----------

side comment: both dems and repubs are characterizing the raid as an abuse of power, and they are subtly pointing at the white house. Question: would this latest 'abuse of power' make dems/repubs more receptive to a censure motion or more?

1. Re: "By the way where's the other $10k?" He filled up his tank on way home
Or maybe he needed to fill some not-from-Canada medical prescriptions?

4. I think it's more than that
there's something in those documents that is going to be very damaging and the most damage will be to the repubs.

if the documents incriminated just Dems - hastert wouldn't be in a tither about them, Bohner wouldn't be yelling about taking it to the supreme court.

If the raid was done without a warrant - I might giggle a bit, but I would understand the "outrage" over a warrantless search/seizure and would be screaming right along with Hastert.

but it was a LEGAL WARRANT. It's the jefferson papers -- something is in there that has the potential to :nuke: the repubs big time

5. agreed, at least they had a warrant this time, a step up for this
admin. Co-equality does not give Congress carte blanche to hide their illegal bullshit in their offices and defy a judicially approved warrant sought by the executive. I'll defer to others if the warrant should have been executed by the Capital Police or FBI, I don't know the answer.

7. You need to read this thread
entitled, "Why the Illegal FBI search of Rep. Jefferson's office is so bad:"

It is a separation of powers issue, and the top of a slippery slope.

10. yeah, ok
but the republicans have been drinking the kook-aid and rubberstamping anything the bushies want - so why are they bucking the system now?

it's not because they are concerned over an 'abuse of power' - if they were then this screaming would have started long ago

while 'abuse of power' is a concern - it's being used as cover for something more dangerous and directly related to members of congress

8. The Republicans want this to fester
and stay in the news so the public will blames both parties for corruption.

Of course, it's only natural that Republicans would defend a guy who wraps $90K in cash in tinfoil and stuffs it in his freezer.

9. Maybe they are getting out ahead of the problem. They don't give
a tinker's damn about what was taken from Jefferson's office. But I'm betting the farm they would care a lot if the search is allowed to stand and the Dems take control after the Nov. elections. Methinks that sends shivers up and down their yellow coward spines. They have got to realize that after letting Chucklenuts and the Criminals take control over everything their precious little asses are on the line come the mid-terms they had better start wrestling a little control back or their offices will never be safe.

I DO want separate but equal branches of government. I DON'T want one branch to be able to search the others' offices for political purposes but more than anything else - I WANT EVERY DAMN ONE OF THEM TO OBEY THE LAW, NOT TAKE BRIBES, AND WORK FOR THE COMMON GOOD OF THIS COUNTRY. Doesn't matter to me whether they are Dem or Repugs - obey the law. And while you are at it, enforce the Bill of Rights, stop using the Constitution as toilet paper and quit pandering to special interests.

And it is too bad the repugs get their panties in a wad over their offices and homes but don't mind handing over to Chimpy everything about the rest of us. Hassert, Frist...welcome to our world.

11. it's the DOCUMENTS
this is where the real story is...

it's more than abuse of power by the bushies - it's abuse of power by Congress via bribes and who knows what else
