What is art?
I once heard that an artist had asked super famous anti-semite Henry Ford, "Are you Jewish?" while attending a black tie dinner party at the Ford estate.

This, is art.

1. according to the dictionary...
"The conscious production or arrangement of sounds, colors, forms, movements, or other elements in a manner that affects the sense of beauty, specifically the production of the beautiful in a graphic or plastic medium."

I can agree with that with the exception of "beauty" and "beautiful." If we replace that with a more broad "evokes an emotional response," we're getting pretty close.

So your example, arguably, would fit my definition.

5. I would have loved to have seen Ford's face when he was asked that
question.

Carl Sandburg said that poetry was the synthesis of hyacinths and biscuits. Art can be that more broadly.

It seems to often be a sanction for provocation and for privacy, with each of us setting our own terms for exploration and resolution.

To steal from Robert Duncan, it is "a place of first permission."

10. Ford was furious, and went into a big anti-zion rant
I think that artist (her first name might have been Fredina) asked him again when leaving (When leaving the Ford dinner party she may have said something like, 'you are the most generous jewish man that I have ever met'.) She really got his goat.

11. I guess so! That's intense. And considering the issue, it was
likely a goat he never got back.

6. art is whatever you want it to be
I HATE people who try to define art, or decide what is/is not art.

9. It is the expression of some part of the collective consciousness...
in a new, original, moving or beautiful way.

It is not, as commonly believed, expressing yourself. Any nut can stand on the corner and do that. And many do.

13. Art is the definition of a culture
If you want to understand a culture - look at its art.

The best art gives you a LOOK into what it was like to be alive at a certain point in history.

The High Points in many cultures are represented by the Highest of Arts.

Unfortunately, it looks like our culture is going downhill...

16. Many hate Rap & HipHop & prefer the gentle folk-rock of their youth.
Despite my own musical preferences, I agree that art reflects the culture.

Even back then, we white kids with a chance for college had it better than some. And now many white kids don't think that peace, love & rainbows await them.
