*** FAITH AND REASON BRING BILL MOYERS BACK TO PBS ***
FAITH AND REASON BRING BILL MOYERS BACK TO PBS
WITH NEW SERIES BEGINNING JUNE 23

Moyers and the World’s Storytellers Confront the Pressing Questions
Facing a World Divided Over God and Religion

“What kind of a god is it that's upset by a cartoon in Danish?” asks Salman Rushdie in the premiere episode of Bill Moyers on Faith & Reason. Rushdie is among the prominent authors featured in the PBS series, which takes on the most persistent questions facing us today. Is the vision of religious tolerance just a utopian dream? Are we destined to live out this century in a sectarian hell? In a world where religion is poison to some and salvation to others, how do we live together?

In the tradition of the landmark series Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth, Bill Moyers on Faith & Reason, premiering Friday, June 23 at 9 p.m. on PBS (check local listings), features provocative conversations with unique voices drawn from the group assembled at the PEN World Voices Festival in New York: Margaret Atwood, Mary Gordon, Martin Amis, Richard Rodriguez, and others. During the course of seven hour-long weekly episodes, Moyers takes viewers on a rare journey deep into these writers’ work and their own experience to plumb new ways of thinking about the role of religion in shaping our world. The resulting conversations provide revelatory observation on the long-running argument between believers and disbelievers, and enlightening perspective on the fear, violence and intolerance that grip our times. Reverent, irreverent, thoughtful and often humorous, these authors deliver fresh perspective that taps into an undercurrent in the national discussion and will resonate with the religious, the non-religious, and those in between.

(snip)

Bill Moyers on Faith & Reason will be supported by an extensive companion Web site at www.pbs.org/moyers where visitors can interact, give feedback, and discuss the issues presented in the series. After the broadcast, each episode will be available in its entirety for viewing online.

1. Bill Moyers gave me faith
that the Chritian and mytholoygical world could evetually merge. By all superficial appearances I'm not so sure now. Still I have hope.

Thanks largely to him.

5. Bill Moyers gave me faith
that all southern Baptists weren't the intolerant assholes who made my life hell when I was a kid in North Carolina, a kid with an Irish Catholic mother, a Jewish last name and no shame in either.

Bill Moyers is one of the people who told me that believers are OK as long as they stay on message, and that the message is a good one, that religion can be a positive guide for some people, that it isn't always used as a club.

16. If not for accident of birth by adoption
I would have been raised Southern Baptist...*shudder* Instead I got to live through Catholic hell....so actually, they both suck!

Personally, I'm a liberal Christian and would never 'club' anyone for Jesus!

9. "Sometimes, so suddenly there is God."
Thank you, Blue Sapphire, for alerting me to the coming - not soon enough, but coming - of manna in the desert. What a group of contributors, huh? Guess this means I have to figure out how to work the television again.
Is it June the 23rd yet?
Is it almost June the 23rd?
When is it going to be June the 23rd?
Something bad (terrorist attack, martial law, whatever) better not happen on June the 23rd!

10. I love Bill, and might have watched...
... just to see Bill.... had I not just finished reading: The End of Faith by Sam Harris. He says

Faith and Reason are antithetical. A rational person has only one choice. I agree... I've felt that way for years.

I went to Catholic grade school, Jesuit High School, and then the Marines, so I have some experience with belief systems and dogma.

Faith is belief devoid of Reason.

We need a return to Reason.

28. They are not antithetical at all.
Edited on Fri May-26-06 06:58 PM by hippywife
My belief system is the reason I work in the peace and justice community. It's the reason I'm a member of the Interfaith Alliance. It's why I want to see the religious right reined in. There are many of us of all faiths that work from a point of reason.

I went to Catholic grade school, too, then had no spiritual aspect to my life at all until my early thirties when I went to a non-denomination Christian Fellowship. Now I go to no one church but carry my beliefs and my faith in my heart.

14. Is the end of the world nigh?
Fox calls Bush incompetent.
Bush admits a mistake.
Galloway declares a Blair assassination justifiable.
Bill Moyers is back.

All I can say is,it damn well better not end before the Moyers series!

24. If you like Moyers - Please check out "State of Belief" - Rev. Gaddy
You can download and listen to past radio shows (AAR - Sun at 5 EST) here:

<http://www.airamericaradio.com/stateofbelief/>
-OR HERE:
<http://www.airamericaradio.com/download>

This past weekend, 'State of Belief' addressed how mainline Protestant churches are being taken over by political extremists. Gaddy had several guests who talked about how conservative think tanks - like Heritage Foundation - bring in church folks from all over the nation for training workshops to convince them to become part of their Church Board. Once on the Board they can push for the anti-gay agenda and push their pastors to deliver other political messages in church.

Moyer's series sounds like it will be very good, but possibly not go directly at the nuts & bolts of how conservative organizations are infiltrating and damaging community churches with their political agenda.

Week after week 'State of Belief' is good!
