So how much do I have to ante up to get google off this site?
On occasion i clicked on the paid ads on the left of the screen. I will not ever click on a google ad, not ever. I want them to go away. I see them as everything we are against being shoved in our faces.

I hate being marketed to. I am a consumer by default not because I can be bought or sold.

Google ads suck..:puke:

8. Is it really getting in the way of anything at all?
I tend to disagree with you, however, if you use Firefox with Adblock you don't see them at all. I didn't even know the ads were there until I saw all the threads about them. So, I hung out on DU using Internet Explorer for a while. I didn't find them intrusive at all, but I went right back to Firefox of course. ;)

28. Go here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions.php?app=%7bec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384%7d

Adblock can be found under "Top Extensions" towards the bottom half of the page.

It works like a dream. NO ads anywhere. Period. It's heaven. Enjoy! :)

40. I can't get it to install
I get the message that "software installation is currently disabled. Click Edit:Optoons to enable it and try again". But I don't see what I have to change. I tried allowing that page to allow popups but that didn't help.

to get it to install properly. I got it to install by sheer luck. LOL? Someone help here, OK? ;) If no one answers here, go to the computer/software forum. They'll know what to do! :) It's worth the effort. Adblock is great.

43. Its easy...
all it means is that the site you are trying to install the extension from isn't an approved site. This is for security reasons, because a bad extension could theoritically hijack the browser. OK, so, if you trust the site, when you attempt to install the extension then you click the "options" button that is up in the yellow bar that appears, and click to allow the site to install extensions.

48. It's the Mozilla web site
I opened the "Edit Options". Then I opened the Downloads tab and see the list of allowable extensions. But there's no place to allow the site to install the extensions nor to add the extension for this download. It's not intuitive.

Btw, I have the latest verson of Firefox. Maybe I need to reinstall it. It could be buggy.

I have to close it down. it becomes unresponsive. I think it has to do with pagefile fragmentation. Almost never happens with IE.

44. that shocks me! are you using the tab feature to open new windows, or
are you opening multiple separate browers? that might be the problem, I don't know, I never use anything but FF and it kicks IE's ass. Not one hijacker since install, and IE gets me an attempt every single time it is opened (for those few sites that don't support ff)

I don't click on ads either, but why are you letting them get to you so much?

Ads help DU pay the bills, s they do on every other web site. Just ignore them.

The ones that piss ME off are the dam popups! THOSE are the ones that really get in your face!

a different color at least. I spend most of my time in "latest" and the relevant center column is more narrow than the right column.....due to the ads I guess. It just doesn't make sense. It give priority to the ads and not the content.

Maybe we could sell them some voting machines?
How about some software for the VA to scub hard drives before they donate PCs to Goodwill?
We could sell them some old information that was freely available on DU before the Iraq War that Zarqawi was camped out in the Kurdish region of Iraq under the Northern no-fly zone. So they would quit trying to scare us about how he is 'on the loose' now. Maybe if they bought that information from us they could shut up about it so they don't look so fucking stupid when they spew about him now?

32. I like Google ads
I don't buy much on the web..or anywhere else. But I like Google ads. Google's contextual text ads and copycats have enabled all sorts of free and excellent services that had pretty much disapppeared from the web prior to AdSense appearing. Even before the ads, Google basically saved search. Search sites were going pay-for-placement and results were getting useless and if that kept up, that would have been the end of the web providing an even playing field for the little guy. Google has played a big part in keeping the web as free to use and even publish on as possible.

Edited on Thu May-25-06 11:12 PM by union_maid
First of all, there are ads on everything on the web. Second, it'll probably take a little time before the admins decide exactly where and how it's best to place the ads and how they should look, etc. It'll probably take a least a couple of weeks before it is what it'll be.

*Edited to clarify first sentence.
