CNN's Schneider Likens Gore to Nixon
Could Al Gore be the next Nixon?

Most Americans last saw Al Gore on December 13, 2000. That's when he ended his concession speech by saying, "And now, my friends, in a phrase I once addressed to others, it's time for me to go."

But look at Al Gore today. Magazines are running articles on "The Resurrection of Al Gore" (Wired) and "The Comeback Kid" (New York). His new movie, "An Inconvenient Truth," opened this week, and it's drawing good reviews: "A necessary film," writes A.O. Scott in The New York Times. For an Al Gore movie, that's a rave.

Could this be Al Gore's moment?

2. Kind of ironic, considering...
...how the Nixon White House targeted Gore's father back in the 1970 midterms.

Nonetheless, here's a question for you:

Q. What do Al Gore and Richard Nixon have in common?
A. Policies that would be thought far too liberal by today's Republicans. :eyes:

3. No, I think the comparison is apt and heartening
Nixon washed out in 1960 and was OVER by 1962 when he did that pitiable "won't have Nixon to kick around" thing.

Gore is nowhere nears Nixon's depths and the prognosticators who've declared him finished as a presidential contender have forgotten Tricky Dick.

9. yeah, this is a POSITIVE comparison...
He's not comparing Gore to Nixon like "thank God Gore's not in the White House, 'cause then you'd see some real corruption and totalitarianism that would put Nixon to shame" but in their political experiences.

Gore "lost" an extremely close election--as did Nixon--, the media and political establishment wrote Gore off as a political has-been--ditto for Nixon--and now Gore is making a roaring come-back, just as Nixon did in '68.

I don't see how anyone can think this is a bad comparison. Schneider is saying that perhaps the political and media establishment has been wrong about Gore, and he may be even be headed to the White House! How is this bad? :toast:

13. It's bad, because...
...to the average American, Nixon stands for corruption and sleaze. Linking "Nixon" and "Gore," whatever the actual context of the comparison, will cause said average American to associate those qualities with Gore, too.

It's sort of like doing a story on Howard Dean and comparing him to Osama, in that he started a movement of revolt against the status-quo and became a hero for millions who wanted radical change. :eyes:

7. B* makes Nixon look decent and respectable. I would support a Gore
comeback, a Kerry comeback; At the moment, I'm open to anyone but Hillary, much as I think she'd make a great President. I just don't think she'll win, and we absolutely have to get rid of these sleazy, corrupt Republicans.

12. It ousted a leader who would have made REAL change
CNN and the corporate media smeared him for enthusiasm and testosterone.
And a Democrat did not get the Democratic nomination to hold office as a Democrat.
He would have camped in Ohio. I'm sure he would not have conceded our democracy. Somebody would've been spittin' Chicklets in Ohio.
