I read this post yesterday...
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=364&topic_id=1279194thought the approach was excellent - little did I know I would have the opportunity to try it myself sooo soon
the discussion with a sub-contractor at work started out by talking about Kenny-boy
from there it went to the energy/gas prices
the sub-contractor blustered about how it was the Democrats fault / Clinton's fault (the usual rush-dittohead blather)
I pointed out that Clinton wasn't in the White House anymore - and asked why bush wasn't doing anything about it?
he said - the president can't do anything about gas prices.
me: then if bush - as president - can't do anything about it - how can you blame Clinton for the problem - by your logic, Clinton couldn't do anything about it either
Sub-contractor: well, the democrats aren't fixing the problem
me: the democrats aren't in charge - the White House, the House of Representatives, the Senate, the Cabinet are all controlled by Republicans and have been for the past 5 years. The democrats are in the minority and have no power to set the agenda - and when they try to introduce legislation to address problems - the republican leadership either prevents the legislation from reaching the floor or goes on a smear campaign.
so how are democrats suppose to fix things when they aren't allowed to speak?
he looked thoughtful for a few moments, a lightbulb went off and he said "well...you might be right on that point...."
