Just read some really shocking statistics from the office of State Senator Mary Lazich of New Berlin. She says the numbers come from a Wisconsin Youth Risk Behavior Survey developed by the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and administered to students in grades 9-12 throughout Wisconsin in the winter semester of the 2004-2005 school year.
Can you believe four out of every ten high school students in Wisconsin - 40 percent - said they had already experienced sexual intercourse? We're not talking about just Seniors here. The survey included everyone, Freshmen on up.(snip)
Most schools in Wisconsin have some sort of sex education classes. In several, participation is mandatory. I have actually seen criteria for one of those classes in a local school district that required "alternative life styles" to be presented as an acceptable option. (At the time, this stand was being promoted by none other than that elementary educational icon, The Weekly Reader.) I happen to strongly disagree, but that's subject for a different column on a different day.
What was not required was teaching that abstinence is the best and safest alternative, or even that it is a commendable alternative. In fact, it wasn't even mentioned as an alternative.BTW, if you havn't guessed, Lazich, who is mentioned in the teen sex bit is a Repuke.
