How about this? Ads for non-subscribers, no-ads for subscribers?

(I don't care either way; but so many posts are simply anti-ads that I wanted to counter the negativity.)

12. Yes- Accuweather,com does it

The ads on their free site are pretty annoying so I bought a premium subscription that removes the ads.

5. That might not work because I'm sure some non-subscribers......
.....have discovered the beautiful benefits of FIREFOX. They also have some down-loadable extensions that make all those ads a quick thing of the past.

I don't see one ad unless I specifically want to.

Keep in mind though this google thing could - as Skinner said - make fund raising drives a thing of the past. For those who must donate in regular small amounts that could be a benefit.

Last but not least, if this google thing keeps DU running, which in turn keeps me from killing some neocon/fundie, then I'm all for it. I'll just work around it.

7. You don't see it, but does the software
block it at the source, or does it have to come through first? In which case any ads and anything within do get deposited on one's computer in some affect.

14. I have no idea - I'm not a puter techie by any stretch - all I know.......
.....is I don't even get a text box where the ads would ordinarily be. On my screen DU is now the way it used to be, just the forums and no ads.

21. Yep, I use Firefox with the "Adblock" extension...
...and I haven't seen a single ad. DU looks exactly like it always did. Ads are gone on every site I visit. If there are any donors who don't like ads, a switch to Firefox with an ad blocking extension would make the ads disappear unless you want to see them. And if you have never used Firefox, you may be surprised at all you can do with it. Once I tried it I never looked back.

10. That's not the point. BTW,
I suggest you respond to the 9 million posts with subjects like "Ads are ____" or "DU is _______ because of the ads" posts. (I'm waiting for anti-administrator posts to crop up at some point too...)

9. Discuss the ads themselves
I'm gonna start cutting and pasting them in to posts so that i can
establish the same context, as if you're seeing different ads, it
changes the nuances as to how the corporate message affects the
discussion.

16. Heres the thing no one has brought up yet
Skinner stated on the journal entry about the ads that if they are clicked too often it gets yanked anyway due to fraudulent activity.

Granted we have patrons to due who have yet to contribute due to hard times then we have those who lurk and cause chaos, who will never contribute a dime being from "other boards"

How hard is it for a freeper to hit the button x amount of times for the advertisers to consider it fraudulent behavior? Then it gets yanked anyway?

So even if you were to allow for contributers to be free from advertising you still have that nasty element that causes hate and discontent, and has managed to slip under the radar, who will never contribute to DU.

So whats to be done about those who will abuse it anyway? I see it getting yanked once freepers figure it out, just because they are nasty that way.

20. I'm enjoying the GOOD ads.
Have already purchased Madeline Albright's new book and a subscription to Ironweed Films. http://www.ironweedfilms.com/

Now, the BAD ads, yes, lame, but I like being aware of interesting stuff I might want to buy.

23. Too republican for me...
I don't like the idea of the "haves" versus the "have not" donated.

I think it would be rediculous to advertize to those who don't have funds to donate, or asking them toview something that some posters do not want to view based on donations, which in many cases is determined not by desire, but by financial resources.

But, as I've said in another thread, I at least admire a suggestion for improvement that comes with a complaint, I just don't think (IMO)that this suggestion is good for DU.

Having them in the middle just seemed more intrusive.
