1. Where are you looking on the site for opening day stats?

It would be REALLY cool if you are right -> :bounce:

2. It's comparing apples to organges with 3735 to 4 theaters
I think it's good nonetheless.

6. Comparing 'theater average' box office is pretty common...
From the Rotten Tomatoes site:
<http://www.rottentomatoes.com/movies/box_office.php>

United 93 is showing in 1,380 theaters and the theater average intake is $1.1k

Akeelah and the Bee is showing in 751 theaters and the theater average intake is $1.3k.

So more people are going to see Akeelah and the Bee where it is available - movie theaters look at this to decide which movies they should bring in next.

9. But you're comparing 1380 to 751 not 4000 to 4
it's not a good arguing point

12. Agreed. I hadn't really noted how very small the sample was when I
skimmed the OP. Maybe we will get lucky and MoveOn.org and other groups will get people across the country aware of the movie and excited to go see it and we will have a repeat in more cities & more theaters. If "Inconvenient Truth" could do even half as well as Fahrenheit 911 - that would be awesome!

8. I agree. It's good to see, but the attendance for those four theaters
was pretty targetted -- if it opened on 400 screens and maintained that average, it would be much more valid a comparison. I'm guessing the 4 screens were in, probably, NY, LA, Chicago and maybe Atlanta -- with a show like that and a pop. base of a couple million, it will probably sell out.

I have to wonder what kind of shoestring it was made on -- if they are counting on the revenues from its limited release to pay for a wider distribution. Can't wait for it to get here.

3. 88% Fresh Rating on "Rotten Tomatoes" - Woo-Hoo!!

An Inconvenient Truth (PG)
<http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/inconvenient_truth/>

Opening: May 24, 2006

New York Magazine: "An Inconvenient Truth is one of the most realistic documentaries I’ve ever seen -- and, dry as it is, one of the most devastating in its implications." -- David Edelstein, NEW YORK MAGAZINE

"What could have been mired in political rhetoric or techno-speak is instead illuminating, fascinating and sometimes frightening." -- Claudia Puig, USA TODAY

"... it's impossible not to be shaken, stirred, and, finally, thoroughly enlightened by what the man is saying."
Click for Full Review -- Gary Goldstein, REEL.COM

"The argument would be compelling and moving, even if delivered stiffly, but one of the real revelations of the film is his relaxed, personable, often funny, delivery." -- Andy Klein, LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT

"Inconvenient Truth might not be to everyone's tastes, but it's trying to do something positive in a time when forward thinking always seems to be punished." -- Brian Orndorf, EFILMCRITIC.COM

And, of course there are a few of these:
"Al Gore is a big fat liar." -- Eric Lurio, GREENWICH VILLAGE GAZETTE

5. Careful: Rotten Tomatoes gives extremely unreliable percentages
They measure real critics, bloggers and casual reviewers alike. Their percentages always look skewed.

7. I've found "Rotten Tomatoes" to be a pretty good guide for
what I will like and won't like, but then I also take the time to read the comments and assess who said what.

In general, I think the vast majority of movies made today are crap and the 'Rotten Tomatoes' critics tend to be pretty tough, so that works for me.

4. If so, this tells us where the interests and concerns of
movie goers and many who may not be regular movie-ites, do indeed lie.

Ha...and the "hits" just keep on coming at the face of the criminal leagion of bushco.

Thank You Al Gore, still My President..and leading the United States of America from an office outside of the White House, in his own way.

President Gore surely doesn't need to be physically in the Oval Office to preside over this America..
I'm certain his approval rating is far higher in every department than the squatters on Penn. Ave.

10. I would think the box office totals will be hard to figure now. It seems
to be in selective theaters now. I live in a suburb of NYC and it's only playing in Manhattan. There are theaters up here that do show documentaries, but so far, not scheduled. Hopefully it will be more available next weekend.

11. The important thing to look at are the per-screen averages — and they
look very good indeed.

Interesting little book that I had to read as part of stats course. You may want to look it up sometimes.

16. I teach stats. The 'average per theater' is a legit comparison - just not
with having only 4 theaters for one movie versus 3,000+ for the other.

Posting that you think someone else ought to go read "How to Lie with Statistics" without explaining your thoughts about what it has to do with the ongoing discussion isn't very helpful, IMHO.

18. Sorry and thank you for your comment
that little book showed as with the above, how misleading the conclusions can be when we selectively choose our samples.

Do you use this book in your class? Mine was 26 years ago so perhaps things have changed since.

20. I wish I were teaching 26 years ago - LoL!
I would like to assign it - but these days undergraduates would go on the rampage if you assigned more than one textbook for a class. "How to Lie" is pretty readable, though, and it would meet my overall goal - stimulating students to think critically about information: numbers and words. Occasionally, I have fantasies of making up brief in-class or extra-credit exercises that teach the best insights from "How to Lie."

15. F.Y.I. "The March Of The Penguins" opened in 4 theaters in the U.S.
It did $137,492 in it's opening weekend.

The opening weekend is not over for An Inconvenient Truth, and it's on it's way to matching or beating that opening (knock wood). Never the less, folks should let everybody they know in the LA or NY areas about the film, so that it definately beats "The March Of the Penguins".

19. I think MoveOn.org is sending emails to its members on a rolling
schedule - so that the email arrives just before "Inconvenient Truth" opens in their area. Given that the MoveOn database is probably 4,000,000+ by now - that is pretty good direct advertising and people will tell their friends. Have you seen any ads on TV?

There are 120,000+ people who have pledged to see the movie at
http://www.climatecrisis.net

And the list of theaters it will be playing at grows daily:
