It has been suggested that the decision to attack Iraq was a good one at the time. That is was a good faith effort and a good call gone bad. I am not buying that suggestion for one minute. Let us go back and look at the decision process. It came down to a battle between the liberals VS the Necons/conservatives. If we review the situation, we can see the mistakes that were made and see where flaws in the thinking process led to this horrible choice.
UN inspectors-
Remember that prior to invasion the UN had weapons inspectors doing a very good job inspecting Iraq's facilities. Saddam was giving them unpresidented access to facilities and was cooperating nearly fully. With this issue.
Liberals- We shouldn't rush to war. Let the inspectors do their job. That way we will have all the facts and will not mistakenly rush into war.
Neocon/conservatives- liberals are stupid. If we wait we will miss the good war season. Run them out of there and start the invasion.
The WMD threat
The case made that Iraq had WMDs and were a threat to the United States. The arguement was that the war was legal self defense. The claim was that Saddam had WMDs and the means to deliver them against the United States (by missle or terrorist).
Liberals- There is not a good case that Saddam has WMDs. The WMDs, if they do exist are not in the quantities nor is there a means to effectively deliver them against the US. There is no evidence that Saddam is working with terrorists. In fact evidence suggests that Saddam opposes the Islamic Fundementalist that comprise the Middle Eastern terrorist threat.
NeoCons/Conservatives- Liberals are stupid and they don't know what they are talking about. What are we suppose to do wait for a mushroom cloud over NYC as proof? Saddam poses a real and immediate danger to the United States.
Invading Iraq will be a mistake
Remember that there were many, including George Bush's father that said invading Iraq would be a terrible mistake.
Liberals- Invading Iraq would be a big mistake. We are going to get tied up in a costly quagmire. Our troops will forced to be an occupying power and will be forced to deal with constant guerrilla attacks. Worse the invasion would increase the hatred for the US. It would help the terrorists and others who claimed the US is trying to conquer or colonize the region. Also it was pointed out that we had not finished our mission in Afghanistan and that a second front take away resources from the first mission, thereby hurting our war on terrorism.
Neocons/Conservatives- No wonder why liberals always lose! They are stupid with no grasp on reality. We have the press on stand by and planes in reserve. They can be flown, in a momements notice, to one of the many victory celebrations the Iraqis will throw for our victorious troops.
Bringing Democracy to the Region
It was argued by some that on top of eliminating a threat, we would be doing a good deed for the Iraqs. We would be eliminating a harsh dictator that used brutle tactics (not unlike the ones employed by Bush in Falujah) to put down prior US encouraged uprisings. Democracy will flourish and spread through out the region. So the invasion was a mission of mercy for the Iraqi people.
Liberals- History has shown time and time again that Democracy can not be forced on other Counties at gun point. Worse the Iraqi people don't like the US so we will not be happy with any government they elect.
Conservatives- Liberals are stupid and they don't know anything. They are unpatriotic cowards, like the French. Democracy will flourish and bring down all the other dictatorships in the region. There will be a spontanious out pouring of love and gratitude for the United States.
The dollar Cost
There were arguements on how much this war would cost and how it could be paid for.
Liberals- This war will be very expensive. With the tax cuts given to the rich and corporations, we can't afford it unless we want to burden generations to come with massive debt.
Necons/Conservatives- Liberals are dumb. We can do this war on the cheap and the Iraqis will gladly pay us, for our small cost of invading them, with their oil income.
When one looks back on things it is not hard to see why our nation screwed up and attacked Iraq. Our Country listened to the wrong people.
