Angie Dickinson on Ronald Reagan - funny
I had to share this - listening to an interview with Angie Dickinson on NPR. She's discussing her various movie roles and leading men; talked about Ronald Reagan and how nice he was, she considered him a friend and often ran into Nancy traveling in the same social circles. So I'm sitting here rolling my eyes, thinking "oh brother" while I listen to her gush.

Then she's asked if she voted for Ronnie. She said "No, I'm sorry, I did not. I'm a Democrat." She went on to explain that even though he was her friend, she's always been loyal to her party.

:patriot:

1. What she couldn't say on NPR was "He was a nice man even though
he's the biggest screaming asshole I ever met. And while I am not bitter, Larry, Moe, or Shep would have made a better president."

5. I think her way of handling it was graceful, yet clear
She liked him as a person, but didn't agree with his politics.

I never liked Reagan as a president. I can't say that I didn't like him as a person, as I never met him. I have plenty of friends I like that I don't agree with politically.

When I look back at the 80s and compare him to Bush, I will say this-Reagan always came across as a kindly, grandfather type who was conservative because he thought the country would be better off if we could find a way to bring the 50s back. Even when he got taken to task publicly over the Iran/Contra thing (which was far worse than Watergate, imo), he was gracious and apologetic about it when the Tower Report was released.

This Bush is not capable of that kind of grace. He is a businessman and comes across as not particularly sensitive. He has a poor command of the language and is a nervous public speaker. I think Reagan had smarter handlers, and he had all that acting experience to help him be a more lovable figure. I know people who loved Reagan and hate Bush, and it really has little to do with political beliefs, but who they perceive each man to be.

4. Ronald Reagan was a "nice guy"
Edited on Fri May-26-06 12:05 PM by Taverner
No one, even the Democratic Congressmen and women had any issues with him personally.

George W Bush is apparently a nice guy. If the man would have just stayed on his Crawford ranch and just held BBQ's, I'm sure we would have a different impression of him altogether.

Nice guys aren't always good managers. Good managers aren't always nice guys. THink LBJ. Great statesman, Great president (despite Vietnam), great leader. Horrible person. People around him couldn't stand five minutes in his presence.

ON EDIT: A friend of mine met Reagan at a church gig in DC. It was funny, she shook his hand saying "I am a loyal Democrat by the way...and will stay that way..." and he smiled and replied back "I was too...at least I think so.." and smiled. SERIOUSLY!

7. They were in "The Killers" in 1964...
It was a tough-guy adaptation of Hemingway's short story directed by Don Siegel, who specialized in tough-guy movies. She played John Cassavetes' two-timing love interest; Raygun played her sleazy sugar daddy.

Lee Marvin shot both of them at the end...

8. If Reagan had handled AIDS differently alot of people wouldn't be dead.
That's not very 'nice'.

What is that about anyway. I think 'sociopath' is a better description for Bush and Reagan both, than 'nice guy'.
