THE WALL by PINK FLOYD w/ GRAPHICS: part 3 - waters vs. glimore
Blessed are the Peacemakers

In 1981, Roger Waters and David Gilmour fought for control over the destiny of Pink Floyd. Waters left the group and unsuccessfully sued members for rights to the band's name. Since then, guitarist-vocalist Gilmour, keyboard player Richard Wright and drummer Nick Mason have released albums and toured as Pink Floyd. The Hyde Park show of the Live 8 event put together by Bob Gildof marked the first reunion of classic Pink Floyd with Waters.

Bob Geldof (born October 5th 1954, Dublin, Ireland), leader of the Boomtown Rats starred as Pink in Alan Parker's movie The Wall and sings the songs In The Flesh? and In The Flesh.

In the fall of 1984, after watching a BBC documentry on Ethiopian poverty, Geldof was inspired to put together a charity single, "Do They Know It's Christmas." It featured a large number of British pop stars performing under the name Band Aid and became the best-selling single in the UK history. Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie repeated the feat the following year in the USA with "We Are The World." By then Geldof was involved in plans for a massive charity concert that eventually became Live Aid, two marathon shows held July 13th, 1985, at Wembley Stadium in London and at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, featuring a Who's Who of pop/rock talent. Millions were raised and distributed to the African poor.

In July of 2005, Millions gathered at concert venues across the world for a massive musical effort to focus attention on global poverty by pressuring G8 nations to do more to alleviate suffering.

At one point, Rajpal read an open letter from Bob Geldof, which appealed to world leaders for $25 billion in African aid and $25 billion more for other poor countries in the world.

Geldof said the G8 summit also needed to confirm the cancellation of all debt for all countries that need it and remove damaging economic policies imposed as a condition, and make "decisive steps" to end unjust trade, allowing poor countries to build their own economies.

"We will not applaud half-measures, or politics as usual. This must be a historic breakthrough," the letter said.

"Today there will be noise and music and joy, the joy of exuberant possibility. On Friday there will be great silence as the world awaits your verdict," it continued.

"Do not disappoint us. Do not create a generation of cynics. Do not betray the desires of billions and the hopes of the poorest of our world."

Geldof was nominated for a Nobel Prize and knighted, and his autobiography "Is That All?" became a UK best-seller.

Daddy's flown across the ocean

Leaving just a memory

Snapshot in the family album

Daddy what else did you leave for me?

Daddy, what'd'ja leave behind for me?!?

All in all it was just a brick in the wall.

All in all it was all just bricks in the wall.

like I noticed in your poster. There is one soldier who doesn't have a rifle. Did you ever see this? I wonder what it means?

5. while in rifle companies there is usually at least one non-combatant
It would be foolish to think I fully grasp the genius behind the subtle symbolism of Waters but to me it brings to mind another classic anti-war ballad.

by Lambert-Potter, sung by Coven)

Listen, children, to a story
That was written long ago,
'Bout a kingdom on a mountain
And the valley-folk below.

On the mountain was a treasure
Buried deep beneath the stone,
And the valley-people swore
They'd have it for their very own.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

So the people of the valley
Sent a message up the hill,
Asking for the buried treasure,
Tons of gold for which they'd kill.

Came an answer from the kingdom,
"With our brothers we will share
All the secrets of our mountain,
All the riches buried there."

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

Now the valley cried with anger,
"Mount your horses! Draw your sword!"
And they killed the mountain-people,
So they won their just reward.

Now they stood beside the treasure,
On the mountain, dark and red.
Turned the stone and looked beneath it...
"Peace on Earth" was all it said.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

23. That was the anthem of the movie Billy Jack
One of my favorite antiwar songs is a little kow one by Gordon Lightfoot:

The leaves of grass will not pass on
Though the millstones grind them into dust
For the earth shall give life to them
But only the grass will grow once more

And the brave must fall to honor the names
Of the ones who have gone before
And the earth shall give new life to them
But only the grass will grow once more

If people could look into each other's eyes
What a wonderful place this world would be
All strife would end, we could start again
And dreams like these must not pass on

But the brave keep falling to honor the names
Of the ones who have gone before
And the earth shall give new life to them
But only the grass will grow once more

And the brave keep falling to honor the names
Of the ones who have gone before
And the earth shall give new life to them
But only the grass will grow once more

The leaves of grass will not pass on
Though the millstones grind them into dust
For the earth shall give new life to them
But only the grass will grow once more

to call his old buddy Sir Bob to tell him Neil Young, The Dixie Chicks and Pink might have a good idea about a big 3 day outdoor jam-session where complete Pink Floyd will fit in perfectly. call it a PINK PEACE PARTY err or maybe I better let Geldof come up with a decent name.

it really looks like there won't be a full Floyd reunion tour. On the eve of the Live 8 show they were offered $250 million up front for a full tour and they turned it down flat.

Great song from the great SB. Didn't know Rog was touring. "Amused to Death" is arguably the best all-time political album, ever.

8. Waters vs. Gilmour
Edited on Fri May-26-06 03:14 PM by LibertyorDeath
have seen them both in concert and I have to say

David Gilmour is excellent

but Roger Waters is truly Brilliant a gifted
song writer & Lyricist and Unarguably the main creative force
behind Pink Floyd prior to his departure.

Roger Waters
(born September 6, 1943) is an English rock musician and songwriter.

(1965-1985) Pink Floyd years

In 1965, Roger Waters was a founding member of Pink Floyd, with then lead singer, guitarist, and principal songwriter Syd Barrett – as well as Richard Wright and Nick Mason. Although Barrett initially did most of the songwriting for the band, Roger did compose "Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk" on their 1967 debut LP, Piper at the Gates of Dawn. The album was a critical success and positioned the band for stardom.

In 1968, Barrett's erratic behavior and deteriorating mental health led to his eventual departure from the band. There was talk that without the talented lead singer and songwriter, the band would not be able to sustain its initial success. To fill the void, Waters began to chart the band's artistic direction.

He is best known for his illustrious 1965-1985 career with the band Pink Floyd as one of their chief singers (along with David Gilmour), lyricist and bass player. Following this, he began a moderately successful solo career releasing three studio albums and staging one of the largest concerts ever, The Wall in Berlin in 1990. In 2005, he released an opera, Ça Ira and rejoined Pink Floyd for a performance at the Live 8 concert in London, on July 2, 2005. In 2006, he announced a European tour in the Summer, and a U.S. tour in the Fall. These shows will include a complete performance of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon.

20. Gilmore is a great guitar player but Rog is Pink
there is no doubt. Dave is probably the most melodic guitar player ever, he is also a master of phrasing(when to play and when not to) but Roger is the genius behind Pink Floyd. The first Roger-less PF album needed 12 writers to take his place. Yes 12, and it still couldn't touch what Rog had done. I've been saying this for 20 years, nice to see people are finally coming around...

27. Well that's just sad & a little pathetic
They are one of the most influencial progressive Rock bands of all time with over 70 Million albums sold.

"FROM a premier psychedelic act in the sixties to one of rock and roll`s biggest groups in the seventies and eighties, Pink Floyd has enjoyed a phenomenally successful career. The band created one of the music industry`s biggest-selling recordings of all time in 1973`s Dark Side of the Moon (twenty-five million sold worldwide at last count, and it stayed a record 566 weeks on the Billboard Top 200 chart). Yet Dark Side was but one of several No. 1 records in the U.K. and U.S. for Pink Floyd, as the group successfully merged progressive, ambient, and blues influences into its own highly distinctive blend of futuristic rock. Formed in 1964 at a London architectural school by bassist-songwriter Roger Waters, drummer Nick Mason, and keyboardist Richard Wright."

Wish You Were Here
Lyrics

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skys from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade
Your heros for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

28. Roger did an interview right after the lawsuit over the Floyd name
and he said that it was by design that the band members were basically anonymous. They felt it retained an air of mystery to the band. He also said that it was that anonymity that screwed him in the lawsuit. I remember standing in line to get into a Floyd show and having to argue with people who thought all Roger was was the bass player and that he wouldn't be missed :eyes: Fools. It pleases me to no end that he is selling out shows and finally getting the recognition he deserves. I can't wait for his new albums.

31. The lineup for Rogers tour this year:
"The band consists of Andy Fairweather Low - Guitar, Snowy White - Guitar, Dave Kilminster - Guitar and Vocals, Jon Carin - Keyboards, Harry Waters - Hammond, Graham Broad - Drums, Ian Ritchie on Saxophone, and Katie Kissoon, PP Arnold and Carol Kenyon - Background Vocals.

Looks like basically the same band as the In the Flesh tour with the exception of Dave Kilminster who is replacing Doyal Bramhall III.
For those that don't know Snowy White is a longtime Floyd guitarist. He played on the original Wall shows and on the Wall In Berlin show with Andy Fairweather Low...
