U.S. Military Admits Iraq Massacre -- Months After Press Reported It

NEW YORK Months after the killings were uncovered by the press, the U.S. military finally appears ready to admit that a massacre took place in an Iraqi village last November 19 and then was covered up by soldiers or officers.

"A military investigation into the deaths of two dozen Iraqis last November is expected to find that a small number of marines in western Iraq carried out extensive, unprovoked killings of civilians," Congressional, military and Pentagon officials confirm, The New York Times reports Friday. "Two lawyers involved in discussions about individual marines' defenses said they thought the investigation could result in charges of murder, a capital offense.

"That possibility and the emerging details of the killings have raised fears that the incident could be the gravest case involving misconduct by American ground forces in Iraq."

The military is looking into civilian deaths in Haditha, Iraq.

The U.S. military is set to report that a small number of Marines in Iraq carried out extensive, unprovoked killings of civilians, reports the New York Times. The paper says it may be “the gravest case involving misconduct by American ground forces in Iraq."

N.Y. Times:

WASHINGTON, May 25 — A military investigation into the deaths of two dozen Iraqis last November is expected to find that a small number of marines in western Iraq carried out extensive, unprovoked killings of civilians, Congressional, military and Pentagon officials said Thursday.

Two lawyers involved in discussions about individual marines’ defenses said they thought the investigation could result in charges of murder, a capital offense. That possibility and the emerging details of the killings have raised fears that the incident could be the gravest case involving misconduct by American ground forces in Iraq.

Officials briefed on preliminary results of the inquiry said the civilians killed at Haditha, a lawless, insurgent-plagued city deep in Sunni-dominated Anbar Province, did not die from a makeshift bomb, as the military first reported, or in cross-fire between marines and attackers, as was later announced. A separate inquiry has begun to find whether the events were deliberately covered up.

4. And this time....
let's indict the people who were complicit in this entire sad and sick episode.Sadly, like Abu Gharaib (not Abu Ghareb) as dumbass puts it,the people "found responsible" will be sergeants and corporals and privates. The ones actually responsible are named Bush,Cheney,Rumsfeld, and Rice.:evilfrown:  :grr:  :banghead: Or as Sean Nitwitty and that other piece of human trash,Col.Oliver "the traitor" North said last night after Bush "admits" mistakes",Oh well, that's war.

5. Lock 'em up and throw away the key.
Nothing justifies murder.

The military must punish the guilty severely in order to maintain discipline.

No more My Lai slaps on the wrist.

But I'm not holding my breath. Bush and Rumsfeld have created a climate in which anything goes.

6. An slime republican running against Murtha said that he was unpatriotic
for mentioning that situation in a press conference last week. That is her issue and she is running on it. She says that his mentioning it emboldens the enemy. Now she has to eat her filthy words.
