one of which was my daughter(bragging over:),the parents of the students (25 from each class 9-12) were scattered throughout the room. Very large event. My husband and I sat at table where the other parents were strangers to us. A Rotary Club member sat at each table because besides honoring students they are trying to recruit new membership to their club.
One of the mothers let the man extol the virtues of the club and then asked loudly:"Isn't the Rotary Club a quasi -Republican organization?"
The man literally spit some of his drink out.
Dead silence at the table.
We're all waiting to hear his answer. He's sputtering/coughing and trying to wipe his drink up and turning bright red
My husband says, trying for a soto- voice,"Did I hear the word Republican?" and shoots me a look as if to say "I can't believe it wasn't YOU who started this" I shoot him a look back to say "Be quiet, I want to hear this"
And the Rotary Club member starts "Well, uh... ummmm.. we have nothing to do with politics. Needless to say some of our members may be Republican because many are business owners although some are blue collar business owners such as plumbers and electricians but we steer clear of politics. We don't even have politicians come speak to us during an election year."
The woman asked"Why do you think it has that reputation?"
He fingers his collar" Uh.. I don't.. I can't say"
She then asked "Do you think the belief that it is a Republican organization has anything to do with your declining membership?"
He takes a long sip of his drink.
The waitress' arrival saved him.
Then the guest speaker gets up(Police Chief of town) and does the leadership speech we've all heard but then he announces that the policeman who is like a DARE officer and works primarily with the kids has been called up to go to Iraq.
An audible gasp could be heard and something like a groan. I have written before that I live in an area of MA that votes Republican more often than not. What I witnessed last night has convinced me people are sick of the war and people aren't afraid to challenge what they believe to be a Republican organization.
An amazing, unexpected happening.
