FBI raid on Jefferson's office, chorus of Repub outrage, Gonzales "threat"
to resign...

This all seems like a big staged event.

Someone please explain to a poor simple person what it's all about. Is it to provide "cover" for NOT investigating people involved in the Abramoff deal like Hastert and DeLay?

What? What?

1. They're certainly worried
about those documents that were siezed from Jefferons office. They no doubt have a carefully crafted plan to minimized the damage from the Ney-Abramoff-DeLay corruption investigation and the Jefferson thing seems to be interfering with it.

Workin' hard to keep that house of cards from collapsing.

2. I think it's also to cover their asses when liberals gain control.........
....of the government again. I think neocons see the writing on the wall and they want to set a precedent they can fall back on later.

3. I'll bet you are correct.
A corrupt pol is not necessarily a dumb pol. Chances are he has inoculated himself with incriminating evidence that leads back to corrupt Republicans. That's the only thing I can think of as to why Hastert has made such a strong, vocal defense of Jefferson's Congressional privileges. I don't recall Denny complaining about the majority dismantling/neutralizing the House Ethics Committee. Without peer oversight, I guess they assumed they could do anything they wanted.

7. "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me...you're not going to fool me again."
Closing the barn door after the least valuable horse gets out ... keeping the rest safe. By going through this kabuki, they can prolong the public/media consciousness of "Democrat corruption" and still let Jefferson be prosecuted while saying "never again" to protect the corrupt Repukelickers that're running criminal activities from their Congressional offices. Indeed, that 45-day "seal" might be a handy way of making sure that any evidence against Repukes is eventually quashed.

6. Was the raid actually necessary?
Edited on Sat May-27-06 12:42 PM by rocknation
The feds are allegedly in possession of tapes of Jefferson taking the money, and they found the money in Jefferson's home. What other evidence did they need?

I agree that the raid was staged, but I think it had two purposes: to allow the Rethugs to whine, "The Dems have a culture of corruption, too!"; and more important, to warn the Dems that any attempts to investigate them (especially if they succeed in taking over Congress) can be squelched that easily.

When Dennis Hastert spoke out against the raid, I thought that maybe the Republican Congress had finally gotten the message that Bush's "unitary executive" plans didn't include them. But turns out that Hastert's REAL problem is that HE'S being investigated in connection with Abramoff.

Now the Rethugs are stuck. If the Jefferson raid was legally justified or necessary, why didn't DeLay and Cunningham get one? And is Hastert going to get one?

4. After having had to listen to
"if you have nothing to hide, then you shouldn't be concerned" bullshit for months now, I have little sympathy now that the shoe is on the other foot, as it were. Although I'm hoping that at the minimum, our elected representatives finally get the message this white house has been sending out for the last 6 years. "This would be a heck of a lot easier if this were a dictatorship,.... so long as I'm the dictator". Chimpy

5. Well, for one thing...
All over the media, the "face" of congressional corruption is a Democrat. A black one at that.

8. Devil is in The details,I asked myself the usual,Who?What? Why?
Why? IMO Someone should ask these questions. hmmm...The bribe had to do with someone selling telecommunications technology:think:who? Why would they bribe Jefferson? 'Bush on Thursday ordered the evidence sealed for 45 days to give Congress and Justice a chance to  work out a deal', averting a showdown. IMO Why does bush care about this or a deal?:dilemma: What are they trying to hide?

'The FBI seized evidence last Saturday from the office of Rep. William Jefferson, a Louisiana Democrat. House leaders objected, saying they had violated the Constitution, and demanded that Justice return the evidence.'

For What? Why? 'Former associates have said Jefferson accepted more than $400,000 in bribes to help them sell to Nigeria and other West African countries.:grr:

Who? 'Two of those associates have pleaded guilty to bribery charges, and the FBI disclosed on Sunday it has videotaped Jefferson accepting bribe money and has found $90,000 in cash in his freezer.'http://www.abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=2011144 Hmmm... Where did the telecommunications technology come from? What telecommunications technology? Who Advised bush to seal the evidence?

9. Why defer for 45 days? Because Hastert and some of the other
Repug slimeballs are involved in this case...there is probably something in the files to implicate them....this Dem may be corrupt but I believe the Repugs had something to do with this event ..
