Dave Letterman is a sappy, bleeding heart, lefty liberal ......
And I love him for it.

We all know about what he's doing nightly to skewer Il Dunce.

I'm watching the Indy 500. Dave is a team owner, along with partner and former 500 winner Bobby Rahal. They have three cars in today's race, one driven by Danica Patrick.

Dave was just interviewed. When he spoke about Patrick, it was pretty damn clear from what he said that to have her win would be so very much more than just a win at Indy.

I've seen her on his show, too. He seems pretty damned supportive of her as a driver, a person, and a woman.

I have no idea what any of this means, if anything, but Dave's okay in my book.

1. I don't see Letterman as a "liberal"; he's not political
Just a regular guy, really.

3. I think he's, as you say, a regular guy, but one with a huge
public forum.

I'm not a devoted fan, but I watch his show a few times a week. I can honestly say he's never pissed me off.

Unlike Jay Waterboy Leno, for example.

26. Many people are "regular" - yet political
In fact i'd say most people are.

2. I have always
thought that he is exactly how you describe him. I have no idea but that is how he has always come across to me, even early on when he was a little tougher. Who knows? It is just a hunch.

4. Dave thinks * is an IDIOT. Remember the interview in 2000...
Edited on Sun May-28-06 02:16 PM by autorank
...Dave was making faces. He is a liberal and he's pretty clear about his preferences. How about
the Limbaugh and O'Liely interviews...

He's the master of the nasty one liner. I hope his team wins. Rahal is s trip...looks like the
guy at the tire shop and drives like he was born to raise Hell.

LETS SEE SOME FIREWORKS, WIN IT ALL TEAM LETTERMAN, & MOUTH OFF BY ALL MEANS

5. Dave's always sorta worn his heart on his sleeve
He had a rep for a while of being hard on his guests.

It's my view he was just hard on the assholes.

7. There's a misconception
Criticising and ridiculing Bush, Limbaugh, and O'Reilly doesn't in of itself make a person a "liberal"; it just makes them an American -- or even more to the point, a human being -- who sees through and resents their lies, and wants to let other people know about them.

If Letterman called for things like increased Affirmative Action, expansion of welfare benefits, or mandatory Women's History classes for high schoolers, then it would be accurate to call him a "liberal".

9. Well, did you check Dave's ADA rating...
This is an inference in a casual discusssion. I've been watching the guy on and off since he started.

He's a liberal based on my observations. He doesn't have to line up for all the cause specific
things, imho, to make that judgement.

In any event, we both agree, I'm sure, that he's very funny.

10. He's a very private person and a mainstream talk show host
He would be neither were he to do as you suggest.

But neither case suggests what he really feels. My thread title was gentle, and I sure hope harmless, hyperbole.

Given the dearth of insight into the real Dave, I'll judge him by his actions. And I like the way he's acting.

8. We TiVo him every night, just to see his clips og bush looking like an
idiot.

Don't much care one way or the other for the guest portions of his show - - I almost never even know who they are!

But we never miss his "segments" on Bush. Just the sounds of "Hail to the Chief" make me start chuckling.

11. He's also one of the sharpest political interviewers out there
which isn't saying much, considering the fine tradition of softballs lobbed to the rich and powerful by the overpaid and toadying. However, his political interviews would stand up well even in a country with competent journalists.

I don't think he's particularly political. I think Stupid & Co are making him so.

14. Dave had Tubby Limbore on the show once a few years back.

Made him look like a jerk. Dave said something like "You're just a big gas bag, aren't you?". I had to LMAO. Since that time Limbaugh has not done any talk shows other than one or two ultra RW shows.

He had O'Falafel on a while back. Made him look like a jerk too.

15. Local early morning CBS affiliate news in Chicago runs a
"Did you See Dave?" (clip from last show) feature every morning. I assume it's some national promo offered to local stations. They frequently include some funny Bush-bash moment and cut back to the show the local on air talent laughing at it. Their reaction may be the best thing of all. It means not only the news people but also the management are on board.

17. He's talked about
global warming longer than most news teams have.
Not lectures nut not jokes. It's usually melting glaciers with a few facts he's heard and just saying that isn't right with a worried look and a shake of the head.

He is good at political interviews. You can tell he actually knows what's going on, great questions and comments.

20. she had a little bad luck--just after her last pit stop
and before those of most of the leaders, the yellow flag went out, enabling the other drivers to conserve fuel and to take less of a relative time hit for a pit stop under the caution rules.

It was the right gamble, but just one of those things in racing.

21. That's kinda the tack he took with the Survivor losers
Every other CBS show was dealing with them as some sort of serious 'news'. Dave kept them far from his desk and interviewed them in a very dismissive way.

I think CBS got his message ...... not too many losers go on his show anymore.

22. For a long time it seemed...
...to me like he tried to generally stay away from politics with the exception of the occasional pot shot he'd take at someone from either side of the aisle who happened to stick their head up. But now it looks like he's reached a point where he just can't stand to sit back and watch what's happening to our country anymore---good for him, good for us too.

23. When dimson was first crowned by the treasonous SCOTUS,
Letterman made a comment along these lines (paraphrasing):

"You wonder what it would be like to have Dan Quail as President? Here you go."

I much prefer Letterman to that wormy, "let's make more jokes about Clinton" Leno.
Remember how Leno's wife used to speak about the Taliban's crimes against women?
How does she feel about the * cabal helping to establish sharia law in Iraq?
Seriously, how do these people sleep at night?

24. Dave
The one thing I know about Dave is he absolutely despised the pick of Quayle for VP.

Because of the Indiana connection.

I remember reading all about how he was personally insulted by that choice.

I can see why he found that insulting.

(I *thought* I had misspelled it, but somehow it still brought up 18,000 hits on Google. ;) )
