off. We live in open range country so we have to fence the cows out. They still can break it when it gets rusty. People can slide under it. I do it all the time. I have a couple 100 feet to fix this weekend. Maybe I can get the minute men to help me.

Based on looking at some RW houses, cars, trucks, motorcycles, clothing etc..., you'd get the impression that the flag is the universal ingredient to defend themselves against all people with different opinions than themselves. It's true the I think "ass hole" when I see the flag being abused and used as a friggin' decoration. Maybe they think it will have an equal reaction on the border. The Mexicans will think "damn, these people have so little respect for their flag and they are so shallow as to think that this little piece of cloth is more significant than true human sacrifice, perhaps I don't want to live in America". One has to wonder...

I didn't see Keyes. He scares me to death. His beliefs led him to practically disown his daughter as she is gay. I put family over politics.

Keyes would embrace Nascar if it got him attention. He's a nutcase and his press secretary is an ex-freeker (CAL AKA, Clinton's a lier) and she was the most foul mouthed and arrogant person imaginable. I don't know if she's still with him but she was there when his show was on.

My wingnut brother used to be a big Keyes supporter but even he saw the light. Despite his RW persona, he's still my brother and unlike Keyes, I don't avoid him.

an "idiotic sentiment."

And most here are snickering about the effectiveness and quality of the fencing. I'll be looking for the jokes about the next anti-war protest when the next sit-in at a recruitment center doesn't automatically stop the war. I have a feeling I'll be waiting a long time.

109. Come on
you know as well as anyone else that this is not about economic well being. Immigrants are working jobs that no one else will work, and that is a fact. Ask yourself how many citizens are going to pick grapes or mow white America's lawns.

It's equally not about sovereignty, as last I checked, our "sovereignty" wasn't undermined when the progenitors of, well, just about everyone here were immigrants. A country can accept new people and not treat them like unwanted pests while being completely and fully sovereign.

It's hard not to laugh at the fence itself. The difference between this and a sit-in is that a sit-in really does disrupt the function of that center. That's civil disobedience, that's been demonstrated to make a difference; this is just a joke.

86. That doesn't necessarily mean it's Mexican concrete
The concrete I sell is made in North Carolina and it's labeled "Concrete Mix / Mezcla de Concreto"...so they probably stopped off at a Home Depot or a Lowe's or something in the area and grabbed a few skids of concrete.

Then again...depending on the initial markup, they could very well be bringing it in from outside the country.

56. I'm with the minutemen on this one...
Too many illegals crossing the border equals violation of our laws, exploitation of undocumented workers by big business at the expense of US taxpayers, sudden resurgences of measles, mumps and other diseases that were under control prior to the stampede across the border of un immunized third world illegals and that is just the short list.

Why isn't it okay with you for American citizens to exercise their first amendment freedoms? DO you have a problem with the Constitution? WHy do you stand with illegals and not with citizens of your own nation?

But go ahead everyone and pile on. That's what I expect from the posters on this board when someone disagrees with them. Since so many lack debating skills, and can only attack and not defend, the board seems like more of an echo chamber for nitwits.

61. They just starting building it. It's not done yet.
Maybe you should be laughing at yourselves for being foolish enough to think that this silly picture constitutes the structure that is going to be built (which isn't yet completed). And you should be ashamed of yourselves for supporting the rights of illegals over the rights of American citizens. You all object to the minutemen's actions building the fence, but what are you doing to protect your country and uphold the Constitution? Anything useful other than making fun of those who uphold Constitutional principles and put their belief into actions? Some protest the war, some build fences. It's all good.

The American citizen whose land the fence is being build to protect is having his water lines cut and his property invaded daily by illegals crossing into this country from Mexico. You and the others may not appreciate the fence, but he called the minutemen in to help since the US government is too busy in Iraq, thanks to the democrat and republican congress that put us there. According to many on this thread, the rights of illegals supersede the rights of an American citizen to protect his property and livelihood. That position is unconstitutional and unpatriotic.

And as for going to AZ, thanks for the invitation, but I think I'll pass. But you can go if you like to laugh at the farmer and his fence.

65. Not many facts in your post to support any position...
Perhaps because you make them up as you go along. Got measles? Or mumps maybe. Thank your nearest illegal.

Where will US researchers come up with taxpayer funding in the future to go back into their labs and develop new vaccines to prevent new outbreaks of childhood diseases that were nearly eradicated, (since our current immunization program is being undermined by a third world invasion) now that it's all being spent in Iraq.

Don't forget to thank your nearest democratic and republican congressional representatives for that.

Especially when you gather that the poster wouldn't know epidemiology from an episiotomy.

The recent mumps outbreaks had nothing to do with undocumented workers:

76. There is nothing in your link to the CDC to support your position..
In fact it clearly states that the multi wide outbreak of mumps is under investigation. And you didn't even mention the measles outbreak. Currently it is estimated that 10% of the Mexican population is living and working in the US. Many of those are most likely NOT vaccinated against any of the childhood diseases that have nearly been eradicated in the US, and their exposure to those in the US that are vaccinated clearly presents a risk of undermining the US immunization program.

If you are going to puff your chest and provide links, at least make an attempt to ensure they say something in support of your position, which the link you provided didn't. I am a medical professional working at one of the top ten institutions in the US with many researchers, who, for your information, know how to put two and two together. Try it sometime, you might like it.

It would be fruitless to discuss epidemiological issues with you.

That was the point of the previous post.

You can read the CDC advisory again- or search the WHO EPR's or if you're interested in measles, BBC has a recent article most lay persons can read:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/4871728.stm

Again, it has nothing to do with Mexico.

66. so logically, instead of addressing the problem
it makes sense to build a rabbit fence along the border? I have news for you, my friend, no fence ever built has withstood the migration of people seeking a better life. Ever. And the construction of a wall or fence is usually the last gasp of a failing power trying to withstand change.

Let's look at some of the more famous border walls, shall we?

Hadrian's Wall: within ten years, the Romans had fled the region, and the empire never recovered.
Great Wall of China (the only one the same length as the Border Fence): took 1900 years to complete. At its apex, it was intended to keep the Mongols out. And then Kublai Khan used it to keep the OTHER Mongols out.
Maginot Line: well, we all know what happened there.
Berlin Wall: the wall to end all walls. Built to divide a city, despite guard towers, search lights, land mines, dogs and orders to shoot on sight, people still got through.

oops.

in a fluid world, static defenses are futile. Deal with the issues at hand, but building a futile symbol of a wall is a waste of time and money, for everyone. you want to stop the flow of humanity? change the reasons behind that movement. do you think people want to leave their families, homes and everything they know to move to a country where they will be abused, taken advantage of and generally treated like shit? seems unlikely, doesn't it? but as long as people need to eat, they will go to where the food is. No fence will stop them.

85. The border fence is working in San Diego, despite your denials...
...to the contrary. Drug trafficking and the crime rate there have come way down since the border crossing was erected and that's a fact. That is why the illegals are now crossing into the country through AZ. And the border fence being constructed there will succeed simply because the Southwest United States is bordered by desert, which will provide lots of obstacles for illegals trying to cross into our country by evading the inevitable fencing that will go up to keep them out. If they die in the desert, it is not our problem. Let Vincente Fox and his hand picked predecessor deal with it. We've got our own problems, and taking care of Mexican (or Iraqi) citizens should NOT one of them.

93. hmm, you almost had me, untill...
If they die in the desert, it is not our problem.

yeah, actually, it is our problem (well, at least it's my problem) See, I think that the idea that somewhere, in our own neighborhood no less, conditions are so pitiful and awful, that people are willing to cross a desert, at serious risk of life and limb, just for the opportunity to perhaps escape it, that's my problem. People dying from sheer desperation? that's my problem. If you want to live in a gated community, walled off from suffering, that's your choice, but don't go pretending it's the honorable one.

just a couple of other small points: first off, in the time since the border fence in San Diego was constructed, drug trafficking and crime have gone down across the entire country. Can we blame the decrease in petty crime in Minneapolis on the new border fence in San Diego?

Second off, last year, and estimated 15,000 illegal immigrants entered the US from China. Last time I checked, and my GoogleEarth may be out of date, continental drift hasn't changed the fact that China is 6,000 miles away, and there's the small matter of an ocean in the way. There are roughly 15,000 illegal immigrants from Russia annually. Russia, last time I checked, was roughly as far away as China (or maybe they're swimming the Bering Straits?) no, they come, seeking a better life, and are then owned by organized crime syndicates. It's like slavery, without the cotton gin.

Ironically, one of the major complaints about illegal immigrants is that they don't go home. Well of course they don't go home, WE BUILT A FUCKING FENCE TO KEEP THEM IN. people used to basically migrate across the border, seasonally. if you were a lettuce picker, you came over for the lettuce season and then went home. Can't do that anymore, now you have to stay, it's too risky and expensive to cross. So instead of migrant workers, we get a permanent slave class. make it harder, and you will have a permanent slave class dependant on organized crime. fun, that.

95. Thank you for respectfully forwarding your argument with key points...
like this one:

"yeah, actually, it is our problem (well, at least it's my problem)"

You are right. I should not have spoken so callously by saying, that's not my problem. What I should have said is I want the Mexican government to deal with the problem, and I want the American people to hold their government accountable for causing the problem by passing NAFTA, which is starving out Mexican farmers. But I guess we are not doing enough networking with each other because at the moment, many of us, including myself, are too damned comfortable. But if this illegal immigration problem persists, we will not be comfortable for long. We will be starved out of a living wage and of our own lifestyles, which our ancestors fought to secure for us, against all odds, and which is now slipping away. That lifestyle was the model for the world. That lifestyle, which was afforded to us by our Constitutional freedoms, is why people want to come here to begin with. Unfortunately, many of us may have to suffer to get it back, because our politicians have sold out our Constitution for profit.

"Second off, last year, and estimated 15,000 illegal immigrants entered the US from China."

I am not surprised that Chinese citizens are staying in the US illegally. I guess it is a blessing that we are not bordering China, or else we would be the United States of China in no time flat. China is a full on fascist dictatorship, whose government commits unspeakable crimes against its citizens (not to mention what they have done to Tibet). However, that does not excuse our lawmakers in Washington from looking the other way while our immigration laws are broken by corporations in order to receive campaign donations to stay in power (and other "perks" like private jets, trips, yada yada yada).

Our country had been the model for the world because of the rights it affords its people, which were hard fought and resulted in the highest standing of living in the world. That standing of living is now in jeopardy and that is by corporate design. Corporations are using the desperation of illegals to undermine the living standards of the working class, which in the past made us the envy of the world and is/was the reason people fought to get here. But I have to hope/believe the corporations won't get away with it.

On a personal note, my heart does break whenever an illegal is arrested in the desert. It's tragically sad in a hopeless way and we the people are ultimately responsible because we make up the government that passes NAFTA/CAFTA and such. We must act now to restore our government to honor or Liberty will be lost.

88. Where's your argument? Disjointed statements strung together
...do not convey a clear point of view.

Just because our corporate lackeys in congress allow the agribusiness industry to get away with breaking our immigration laws by exploiting (excuse me, employing) Mexicans illegals in violation of our immigration laws does not mean we the people should continue to allow these illegals to storm our borders. In fact, it is incumbent upon us as Americans to prevent this unlawful influx, which only leads to working conditions that are radically un-American and against every principle our forefathers, not to mention our ancestors, fought and died for. Your argument, which vaguely eludes to a two wrongs do not make a right point of view fails to address the problem at all levels. It doesn't fly.

105. It's called
reality. People want to come to this country mostly because of near necessity. If we built a 50 foot high WALL manned by sentries across the entire border...people would still get in. These immigrants want to come here and work and contribute, and the jingoists can do nothing but scream their delusions. No human being is "illegal". Condemning them to a status that is similar to that of stray cattle is beyond wrong.

I would like to remind you that the reason they are "stampeding" across the border without immunization is because there are few legal avenues to get to the US. If we deny them an open and documented way across the border, they will find another way, simple as that.

Oh, and no one is saying that they shouldn't be ABLE to do this, only that it is the height of stupidity. No one has a problem with the Constitution, only insipid reactionaries and their foolish attempts at making pathetic stunts. I stand with human beings and the obligation to treat others decently and NOT like a problem to be solved.

If you're so fed up with what people are saying here, why don't you get a bunch of chicken wire and join them? I'm sure you'll feel very patriotic inside while you stop not one single person from coming into this country and working.

79. That is an observation about the discussions ongoing on this board...
...and your hate infused post just proves my point. You are an extremist in your opinions, that is evidenced by this nonsense:

That's an insult to DU and DUers and the Minutemen are NOT Posted by UTUSN patriots. They are racist, I-got-mine xenophobes. Their "president" Al GARZA is a self-hating Hispanic. And the Black "homeless advocate" is a self-hating Black. Since when do "patriots" attack an organization (the ACLU) that attempts to keep American values honest? And on what grounds is an elected dude in another country a "dictator"?

Just because you say it doesn't make it so, and frothing at the mouth doesn't further your argument. Do you have a degree in psychology or have you ever even spoken to this individual who you assert is "self hating"? If someone holds an opposing view to yours, that doesn't make them self hating. It simply means they disagree with you. Hating them will not change that, no matter how much you froth at the mouth. It's counter productive. If you want your views to be respected, you must respect your opponents views enough to grant them the right to differ, and then be skillful enough to talk them around with an open mind. That is the only way to build a consensus that everybody can live with. These citizens you despise for their opposing views are patriotic. They are patriotic for having the courage to exercise their first amendment freedoms in defense of their country's borders against an unlawful invasion, as well as to come to the aid of their fellow citizens. Actively exercising their first amendment rights in this manner is patriotic in and of itself.

Ask yourself why you hate your fellow citizens so much for exercising their constitutional rights. You should at least suppport and respect them for that even if you don't agree with their views or their methods. They are not breaking the law, in fact they are upholding the constitution, which in and of itself is more important than the views on either side.

Respect your opponents and win them over with rational arguments, not hate mongering. You can talk someone round more skillfully by appealing to them with an open mind, not a closed heart. You probably have more in common with your perceived enemies than you think.

You try to tell people they aren't respecting someone's first amendment rights when they are doing nothing of the sort. You try to portray others as hateful when you defend the most base of bigots, and when those who you call "hateful" are merely objecting to someone's sentiments and actions (what happened to our right to have an opinion?).

Either start displaying a shred of understanding and maturity or expect to be ignored and ridiculed, something you are no doubt experiencing now.

108. Oh, here's an observation I have
you're so clearly mistaken.

While you seem to like portraying people as "frothing at the mouth", what you fail to recognize is that the poster had quite the point. The minutemen are xenophobes by definition. The point about their "president" is not an invalid one. Your only argument against it is that it is subjective, but you do not state why you think the statement was wrong.

We respect their RIGHT to differ, but that doesn't mean we don't respect our own RIGHT to voice our objections. It seems that you are spiteful of our opinions, effectively making you hypocritical.

They are certainly not patriotic. They are hateful of immigrants, when those same immigrants simply want to come and work as a matter of near necessity. To deny someone this small thing is the absolute epitome of ignorance and it is opposite of anything remotely decent. They want to stop others from being in this country basically because they do not want "them" to be "here" (dare I say they do not like "their kind").

And for the scrillionth time...WE HAVE NOTHING AGAINST THEIR *RIGHT* TO DO THIS. HOWEVER, we are allowed to voice our criticisms and disagreements, and we WILL voice them quite loudly, especially with such an insipid stunt like this.

I'll add more later.

70. I personally think the Minuteman Project is a WONDERFUL
idea! I can't imagine anyplace I would rather see the morans congregate than in the desert, during high summer, playing "soldiers." Let them dress-up as commandos, shoot snakes, swill beer, pat each other on the butt for "saving "Merica" and have a gay ol, bigoted, wannabe "minuteman" time.

Unlike the real minutemen, who faced armed combatants to kick out an unjust rule these guys have convinced themselves they are relevant in a world that will basically ignores them. Role playing soldier is mother's milk to this group. I fully expect uniforms, combat patches and misc assortment of medals to pin on each others chests after each "battle." I personally like the long, delusional project for the chickenshit chicken hawks to keep them out of our hair and our business for awhile.
