Second Abu Ghraib Scandal in Iraq
By Foreign News Desk
zaman.com

United States President George W. Bush said their biggest mistake in Iraq was the torture episode at Abu Gharib prison, but in light of the Haditha massacre, the case of which will be investigated in near future, the Abu Gharib scandal pales in comparison.

Members of the US Congress demanded that the case in which US Marines deliberately killed 24 civilians on 19 November 2005 should be investigated as soon as possible.

The US Marines massacred 24 civilians, including women and children, reportedly in response to death of a friend who was killed in a drive by shooting while on patrol in the town.

1. The blowback on this one could be nasty.
Seriously nasty. As in Middle East in flames nasty.

2. Actually I don't think our military killing civilians
is going to be a real suprise to the Iraqi people.

3. No surprise...but....
it's one thing to suspect it, and quite another
to have hard evidence. And then there's the rest
of the Middle East.

It may not represent a tipping point. Then again,
the death of a certain Austrian Archduke shouldn't
have started WW-I, should it?

7. most Iraqi's have proof already
They have buried relatives and friends, while some of these people were killed as a result of bombings very few Iraqis would quibble over the differences between "collateral damage" and outright slaughter and you can't really blame them. When mum is dead she's dead and if she was killed by the US then she was killed by the US.

I'm really not sure if the US could be any more unpopular with the vast majority of citizens in the Middle East, remember apart from seeing things with their own eyes for the last 50 years, they've been watching news/current affairs that's not quite so sanitised as the viewers in the US are used to.

8. Killing women and children execution style will be.
I doubt even Iraqis thought this kind of thing has happened too often, if at all.

4. does abu gharib 'pale' in comparison? i dont think so.
is torture, sexual depravity and murder against an unknown large number of men, women and children seem to pale in comparison?
