GOP Senses Defeat in CA-50
Edited on Mon May-29-06 11:17 AM by kpete
GOP Fears in a Bellwether Race

Staffers from the National Republican Congressional Committee are quietly telling GOP House members to prepare for a possible loss in the June 6 special election to fill the seat of Randy "Duke" Cunningham, now in prison for taking bribes. The Southern California district is heavily Republican, but some GOP insiders believe that Democrat Francine Busby will defeat former GOP Rep. Brian Bilbray and go on to win a full term in November. More alarming some worry that a Bilbray defeat could signal the GOP's loss of control of the House. The NRCC has already pumped $3.1 million into the race. "It is becoming more and more likely," says one GOP strategist, "that Bilbray will squeak out a victory." But another longtime Republican operative isn't so sure. "This is a district we should never lose," he says. "It's the stink of Cunningham, and the Bush problem."

1. "The bush problem"
According to a republican operative. It won't be long before they know longer speak without revealing their identity. The "bush problem" has infected this country for six years. Wow, it may effect gop elections and now its a "problem." How quaint!

2. "The Bush problem"...
may well infect the entire Republican Party. They have tied themselves so closely to his policies that they cannot credibly unleash themselves.

3. I live in this district and Francine is leading in polls.
She has never been a politician, and her opponent has not only been a politician but also a lobbyist. He is not liked in this district. If he wins, it will only be because of the sheer amount of money the Repugs pumped into deceptive ads that lie about Busby, or that the bastards will steal the election. I don't know too many residents who want more of the same corruption and bullshit.

12. How are the votes counted in this district? That's what will determine.
"If he wins, it will only be because of the sheer amount of money the Repugs pumped into deceptive ads that lie about Busby, or that the bastards will steal the election."

I don't think the people will be fooled by any deceptive ads or fooled enough to swing the election. If the Repubs win, it will be because of another stolen election, probably thru Gropenator & MacPherson's newly certified Diebold machines or clones of same.

14. How do you like those attack ads against Busby?
How they stress the word "Liberal", slurring it out in a tone of disgust.
Looks like the "Liberal" may win this one, in a very conservative district.
Bilbray shot his load long ago and hasnt won anything in years. He'll go back to being a lobbyist once again.

5. Besides "the stink of Cunningham"
Edited on Mon May-29-06 11:39 AM by NI4NI
or "the Bush problem", I'm hoping that district voters there will also question and reject Bilbray's character for attempting to falseley accuse and smear Francine Busby as being supportive of a child predator in one of his campaign ads.

6. did I mishear
didn't it just become public knowledge that he doesn't live in the district? I know that isn't a requirement for congress, but seems it should be a factor...besides all the republican sleeze.

9. He's a resident of Alexandria, Virginia...
Edited on Mon May-29-06 12:27 PM by calipendence
and his kids are paying out of state tuition here in California since he's a Virginia resident (according to his house records there). Oddly enough, he's using his kids having to pay out of state tuition as part of his campaign to fight the issue that many illegal immigrant residents here pay instate tuition to California schools which he feels is more unfair than his kids paying out of state tuition as American citizens.

He's more eligible to be Sibel Edmonds' congress critter (on my sig) than he is ours! He also has a residence in Imperial Beach. His mother or grandmother (can't remember which) has a residence here on the coast, which he's claiming as his residence since he helps pay for it, even though noone has seen him there!

10. Here's another article that asks whether he's tied to Brent Wilkes...
This would be a good challenge out there for any of us that can find a picture of him with Brent Wilkes (at the heart of the Cunningham, Goss, etc. scandals). Bilbray claims not to know him (much like Bush claims not to know Abramoff). Gotta believe there's a juicy photo out there someplace shot here locally in San Diego that would show this to not be true. Let's see if we can find one in the next week or so...

Here's the article that has the following quote from Newsweek:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13006800/site/newsweek

On the second page:

...His life is getting lonelier. He has been dropped by charities; his office building is for sale; his federal contracts are drying up. Once a ubiquitous figure in San Diego politics, Wilkes might as well have ceased to exist. Former San Diego congressman Brian Bilbray, a Republican who was in the House until 2001 before retiring to become a lobbyist, is running for Duke Cunningham's vacated seat. Bilbray told NEWSWEEK, "I may have met Brent once or twice, but I really do not remember." Bilbray did discover that Wilkes had donated $7,000 to his campaigns, but the candidate has given the money to charity. "I wouldn't know Wilkes if I saw him in the street," said Bilbray.

A nice pic of Cunningham and his house auction too here:

Now another interesting article from the DCCC that was earlier has Bilbray "slow" to return campaign contributions from both Cunningham and Wilkes... Interesting, eh?

http://www.dccc.org/news/duke_04192006/

$7,000 Amount of Cunningham money taken by Brian Bilbray.

$6,000 Amount of Brent Wilkes money taken by Brian Bilbray.

(Washington, D.C.) – According to official F.E.C. filings, former Congressman Brian Bilbray refuses to return $13,000 in tainted donations from Duke Cunningham and his co-conspirator. Bilbray accepted $7000 from Cunningham before he pleaded guilty to charges of accepting $2.4 million in bribes and gifts from defense contractors and evading more than $1 million in taxes. He accepted $6000 from co-conspirator Brent Wilkes and his defense contracting company ADCS. Co-conspirator Mitchell Wade plead guilty to four felony counts in conjunction with the Cunningham bribery scandal. Even Bilbray’s former Republican primary opponent Bill Morrow donated a $1000 contribution from ADCS to a local charity in 2005. So why is Brian Bilbray holding tight to $13,000 in tainted cash, including $7000 from a Congressman who went to jail for his crimes?

“By refusing to return dirty money from Cunningham and his co-conspirators, Brian Bilbray has made it very clear that he stands for more of the same old GOP business-as-usual,” said DCCC Communications Director Bill Burton. “Californians need someone who will fight for them in Washington, not one more registered lobbyist to slither around fighting for the special interests and currying favor with contractors. They have experienced first-hand the cost of this kind of special-interests-come-first corruption and they will not tolerate more of the same from Brian Bilbray.”

Anyone out here who can find a "million dollar pic" showing Bilbray standing next to Wilkes? We earlier answered the challenge in helping to out Howard Kaloogian in this race with his "Istanbul/Baghdad" pic... Maybe we can do the same here!

11. Tipping their hand for november, GOP is going WAY negative on Busby
There are ads I heard this morning trying to link her with child porn. She was on a school board in San Diego and another boardmember was found to have been in possession of child porn. The smear doesn't need to be true. Doesn't need to make sense. Should be illegal. Disgusting... and I hope people see that.

This is just the beginning. What we saw in 2000 and 2004 ("they are going to ban your bible and promote gay marriage!!"), a new low in ruthlessness, deceipt, and dishonesty, is going to be trotted out again in 2006. It is going to be ugly and it will narrow the field.

15. Let's Not Forget District 42--Write-in Campaign Vital
Edited on Mon May-29-06 06:02 PM by petgoat
According to the linked thread, unless the late-filing Dem can get 2400 write-in votes,
the Republican will run unopposed in November.
