Police torture in Knoxville TN

When Tennessee law enforcement officials showed up at the home of Lester Siler, who they suspected of drug use, they asked Lester's wife and son to leave. They didn't know that Lester's wife had turned on a tape recorder in the kitchen.

LISTEN TO THE RECORDING OF THE TORTURE... Warning very violent!!! I couldn't finish listening, as it made me sick. Tape is 40 minutes. :argh: :grr: :banghead: :scared: :scared: :scared:

1. Is there another source to this story?
I tend to discount sites that say, "Find sexy singles in (city name)" at the top of the page.

Edit to clarify, the abuse is true. I don't know if the charger was used or just threatened for sure but the abuse and beatings were no doubt real.

7. Thanks. It happened two years ago, and all the cops got 4+ years.
The original post above (I didn't see the previous DU thread) left me with the mistaken impression that this had just occurred and the cops got to skate.

10. More or less, it did.
No fault of the OP for not having heard about it, or of the rest of us. Do a web search, it's really not there. While cops were convicted for torture caught on tape we were hearing about a much more important matter, Janet Jackson's nipple.

This is the first most have heard about it, I follow this stuff pretty close and didn't hear myself till recently. Couple or few weeks ago.

Four Campbell County lawmen will plead guilty this week to the beating and torture of a drug dealer, and federal prosecutors will ask a judge to put them behind bars pending sentencing.

A court date for a fifth Campbell County Sheriff's Department employee accused in the two-hour attack on Lester Eugene Siler has not yet been set.

David Webber, 40, who headed narcotics investigations for Campbell County and is accused of being the ringleader in the alleged torture, is set to plead guilty today to an information charging him with conspiracy to violate Siler's civil rights.

Samuel Franklin, 42, a veteran detective at the agency and head of its D.A.R.E. program, is scheduled to plead guilty Wednesday, court records show. Rookie Deputy Joshua Monday, 24, and process server Shayne Green, 35, are expected to plead guilty Thursday, according to records.

The four lawmen and part-time process server William Carroll, 26, were named in federal informations filed earlier this month in U.S. District Court. They are accused of beating and torturing Siler, 42, last July after showing up at his house in the White Oak community to serve a violation of probation warrant.

Just didn't want people thinking this happened in MY city.

PS. For the record, they pleaded guilty in February 2005 and the Silers were indicted on drug charges in October 2005.

15. Unfortunately, it was in OUR country! And absolutely chilling.
From your link:

"Part of the alleged attack was captured on an audiotape after Siler's wife, Jenny, stashed a tape recorder in the kitchen. An FBI transcript of the tape revealed in chilling detail how Siler was threatened, beaten and tortured, with deputies demanding two things from him: that he sign a form to show he agreed for his house to be searched and that he turn over to them all his cash and drugs.

SNIP

"After making the request, Mr. Franklin threatened Mr. Siler with the use of a slapjack and breaking Mr. Siler's fingers," Roskind wrote. "Mr. Franklin never carried through with either threat nor did he allow one of the other four to use his slapjack or break Mr. Siler's fingers.

"Unfortunately and regrettably, although Mr. Franklin never physically harmed Mr. Siler, he failed to stop the other individuals from inflicting further harm and injury," Roskind continued."

SNIP

And what would we have known about this if his wife hadn't had a tape recorder in the kitchen? Probably nothing.

They will never be welcome here. If they put one foot over the border, we will find them, we will send our law enforcement after them, and we will hound them out of our state before their stench contaminates our Texas air in a way that "Smokey" Joe Barton can't.

I have family in New Mexico too!... and poor México doesn't need them either... though, I bet the thugs don't speak Spanish, so it would be pretty funny to see how or IF the gueros survive!

Speaking of your sigline: "Where they burn books, they will end in burning human beings." It surprised me when it happened in a community I know very well:

"Book Burnings

Alamogordo briefly made international news in 2001 when some residents held a public book burning of children's books in the Harry Potter series. The people behind the burnings stated the belief that the books had Satanic origins and influenced children to take up witchcraft. Several hundred others protested the event."

"Burning Sensations
How would-be censors promote free speech.

In December, just as author J.K. Rowling -- the world’s most famous living single mother -- was about to be made an honest woman again, New Mexico pastor Jack Brock announced a most generous and unlikely wedding present. Brock, the leader of the Alamogordo Christ Community Church, scheduled a "holy bonfire" of all his congregants’ Harry Potter books for December 30. The popular novels about a boy wizard, the 74-year-old parson told Reuters, "are an abomination to God and to me" and are liable to "destroy the lives of many young people." His Christmas Eve sermon asked the tough question, "Baby Jesus or Harry Potter?""

"Freedom to Burn Books
Published: January 6, 2002

To the Editor:

Re the Jan. 3 letter about the book burning in Alamogordo, N.M.:

As a former New York resident and a 22-year resident of Alamogordo, I can say that the great majority of its residents don't share the feelings of the minister and the congregation of the church that burned the Shakespeare and Harry Potter books.

An estimated 600 residents, myself included, turned out at a protest held across the road from the church. The unfortunate example set by this minister was to tell our children that if you don't like something, then destroy it because it offends you. This is reminiscent of what Hitler did in World War II. Yet the freedom to do this in the United States is what makes this country great.

__________

I share Bob's sentiment. I know know that SOB Brock, and I bet Bob does too. Some of my friends and family protested Brock's book burning, which drew a much larger crowd than Brock's silly entourage. Nevertheless, it is a BAD sign for democracy in America. :(

suspected drug dealer who was the victim of police brutality last year is now behind bars.

Monday's Child

A Campbell County Grand Jury indicted Lester Eugene Siler on three counts of selling oxycodone. His wife Jenny Lynn Siler was charged with four counts of selling the drug.

It's a happy ending, according to some of their neighbors in the tiny mountainous Campbell County community called White Oak.

Some people living there have been asking Sheriff Ron McClellan for years to do something about Siler, whose been convicted of several drug charges.

It took longer than it should have, because some officers broke the law, before others could enforce it.

"I hope they find everyone that sells or buys drugs and get the community cleaned up," resident Sharon Marlow explains. "I've watched this everyday and I'm tired of it."

Residents say they're especially tired of alleged drug traffic at the Siler's mobile home, because it sits feet from an elementary school.

They're even more frustrated because five Campbell County deputies were supposed to take Siler to jail a year ago.

Instead, the deputies were fired and sent to prison.

"What eugene went through when they tried to arrest him, no human should have to go through that," Marlow explains.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) found that the five deputies tortured Siler when they were sent to arrest him for violating probation from earlier drug charges.

I wonder why NBC didn't consider this worthy of national news? Hell, large news networks like NBC talk about the 'Aruba girl' and the Duke rape' case 24/7... for MONTHS!

Rhetorically speaking, how come this incident gets a pass?

BTW, Sheriff Ron McClellan is a good and decent man - a top-notch sheriff, really.

He probably ordered the TBI investigation on his own officers himself.

27. I don't blame the cops, no worry
There was a time when I hated cops, long personal story that's off topic here I'd guess, but not anymore. I'd already started to soften on my own then met a few guys at LEAP, gave me a new perspective on things. They can be our best friends once we get them to see it our way.

I hate the drug war, I hate what it's doing to our country, to both the cops and the people they face, but I don't hate the cops themselves. Many are trying to be decent guys in a messed up system and just don't know what else to do. Tell a man he's fighting for the lives of his kids and he can do about anything, that's what I blame mostly. We've got better options but we're doing this because there's more money in it for some, that's the side everyone with an advertising and lobbyist budget is on.

They do need to get active and clean their own house though, terms like testilying and tuning up a suspect have become too common. Can't earn the respect back when most of the reformers are on the outside, they need to work from within.

35. Well, I wasn't saying the deputies were blameless -
they pleaded guilty, so they obviously knew they were caught dead-to-rights... I was just pointing out that their boss is a decent fellow.

But, I do agree with you about the "war on drugs." It's so stupid.

36. I think we just had our wires crossed ;)
When I said I'd love to hear the excuse I'd meant for the press not covering it, didn't occur to me that you might have meant the excuse of the cops who did this till after I posted. Them I knew about, posted the links early in the thread to verify the story was true.

The cops who actually did this I've got no sympathy for, I can understand what drove them to it but they knew it was wrong. Blame for them shouldn't hit others though, at least not past urging them to clean their own house and stop this kind of thing in the future. The thin blue line does its own damage at times, but in the end we're better served to fix it than to just attack them.
