The Shame Of Kilo Company
Sparked by a TIME report published in March, a U.S. military investigation is probing the killing of as many as 24 Iraqi civilians by a group of Marines in the town of Haditha last November. Several Marines may face criminal charges, including murder. And new revelations suggest that their superiors may have helped in a cover-up

Coalition in Iraq continues to dwindle
By WILLIAM J. KOLE, Associated Press Writer

VIENNA, Austria - It's a coalition of the dwindling.

The U.S.-led multinational force in Iraq is losing troops from two of its most important allies — Italy and South Korea — and up to a half dozen other members could draw down their forces or pull out entirely by year's end.

The withdrawals are complicating America's effort to begin extracting itself from the country, where a fresh onslaught of deadly attacks on coalition forces is testing the resolve of key partners such as Britain and Poland.

With 2 More Journalists Dead in Iraq, Total Tops World War II
By E&P Staff
Published: May 29, 2006 11:00 PM ET

NEW YORK The deaths of two CBS journalists on Monday means the Iraq conflict is now the deadliest war for reporters in the past century.

Since 2003, 71 journalists have been killed in Iraq, more than the 63 killed in Vietnam, 17 killed in Korea -- and now the 69 killed in World War II, according to Freedom Forum.

The Iraq numbers do not include the 26 members of media support staff who have also died, as counted by the Committee to Protect Journalists

Bush Aide Called War Reporters 'Whiny' and 'Soft'

By E&P Staff

NEW YORK Karl Zinsmeister, the new chief domestic adviser to President Bush, while embedded with the 82nd Airborne in Kuwait in 2003, declared that "many of the journalists observable in this war theater are bursting with knee-jerk suspicions and antagonisms for the warriors all around them. A significant number are whiny and appallingly soft."

U.S. Is Sending Reserve Troops to Iraq's West

By DAVID S. CLOUD
Published: May 30, 2006
WASHINGTON, May 29 — The top American commander in Iraq has decided to move reserve troops now deployed in Kuwait into the volatile Anbar Province in western Iraq to help quell a rise in insurgent attacks there, two American officials said Monday.

Although some soldiers from the 3,500-member brigade in Kuwait have moved into Iraq in recent months, Gen. George W. Casey Jr. has decided to send in the remainder of the unit after consultations with Iraqi officials in recent days, the officials said.

String of Iraq attacks kill 54, wound 120
By KIM GAMEL, Associated Press Writer
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Car bombs targeting Shiite areas tear through a car dealership in southern Top of Form

Iraq and a bustling outdoor market north of Baghdad Tuesday as attacks nationwide killed 54 people and wounded 120 in the bloodiest day in recent weeks.
Iraqi officials also said a key terror suspect who allegedly confessed to hundreds of beheadings was captured in a raid that also netted documents, cell phones and computers that contained information on other wanted terrorists and Islamic extremist groups.
The worst bombing hit the market as Iraqis were doing their evening shopping in the Shiite area of Husseiniyah, about 60 miles north of Baghdad. At least 25 people were killed and 65 were wounded, Interior Ministry spokesman Lt. Colonel Falah Al-Mohamedawi said.
That attack came hours after a car packed with explosives blew up at a dealership in the largely Shiite city of Hillah, about 60 miles south of Baghdad, killing at least 12 people and wounding 32, Capt. Muthana Khalid said.

Pentagon: Iraq Insurgency Steady Until '07

Tuesday May 30, 2006
By ROBERT BURNS
AP Military Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Sunni Arab heart of the Iraqi insurgency seems likely to hold its strength the rest of the year, and some of its leaders are now collaborating with al-Qaida terrorists, the Pentagon said Tuesday.

In a report assessing the situation in Iraq, required quarterly by Congress, the Pentagon painted a mixed picture on a day when the U.S. military command in Baghdad said 1,500 more combat troops have arrived in the country. The extra troops are part of an intensified effort to wrest control of the provincial capital of Ramadi from insurgents.

2. I'm sorry to say never
It is wrong to expect a reward for your struggles. The reward is the act of struggle itself, not what you win. Even though you can't expect to defeat the absurdity of the world, you must make that attempt. That's morality, that's religion. That's art. That's life.

5. When enough Americans are sick of it all.
When the hangover from all the flagwaving and "Bring it on!" crappola finally hits home and the average citizen sees his kid come home in pieces and has to reach deep in his pocket to pay for it, the "war" will end.

Then even the politicians will feel enough heat to actually do something to end it by defunding the slaughter.

Isn't there a sane place on this world? I need to find it soon.

As many have said that we have incompetence in the White House, i think they are fucking everything up according to plan.

Even if you don't believe in it, some of the predictions are comforting.

I hear what you're saying. Is there any way to legally, peacefully stop these maniacs from destroying democracy, America and the rest of the planet? I feel like Patrick Fitzgerald is just about our last hope, because I don't trust the e-voting machines to yield fair election results this November.

7. The "War on Terra"? Won't "end" until Halliburton and other contractors
have sucked the treasury dry. It won't end for the Iraquis for decades, as it has distorted their country so badly, it will take them a long time to recover.

8. It's very depressing and daunting
Yesterday my DH (a republican...I know, I know, long story) and I were in the car listening to ABC radio "news."

They were "reporting" on Memorial Day protests in Washington, with a sound bite from one of the protesters about America being cursed, the glory being gone from the country or something similar.

The news report mentioned Bush's* intention to stop protests at military funerals and memorials but failed to mention WHO was doing the protesting. Informed people like you and I can read between the lines and realize it was Phelps' group; but people like my husband don't have a clue. Because the average Diddiot equates protestors with "unpatriotic hippie liberal types," a right-leaning hate group like Phelps and company doesn't even come up on the radar. And ABC "news" aids the ignorance and perpetuates the stereotype by failing to mention it was a conservative group doing the protesting.

So I filled in the blanks for my husband. He said the most disturbing thing for him was the attempt to curb free speech, no matter how offensive or vile.

To which I responded: "We haven't had free speech (dissent towards this administration) in this country for a couple of years now. Pre-screened presidential rallies, 'free speech zones,' 'loyalty oaths,' etc. Where have you been?"

I hope I gave him something to think about.

There are days I have to give myself a news vacation (even from Air America) because it gets too damn depressing. This Haditha thing really has me speechless and grieving.

I want this nightmare to end.

13. Eventually but a long time
When the money runs out, when Congress stops authorizing billons for the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. When war becomes unprofitable. It's fundamentally about money. Money may not begin a war but it will certainly prolong one. Boeing and other big defense contracts have been running sentimental, patriotic commercials to tell is war is good. Yes, for them it's not just good it's great, for business that is. If they have their way we'd have perpetual unending war.
If there's someone out there who believes that people wouldn't create something as horrific as war just to get rich I've got sad news for them about our fellow human beings.

14. I don't think anything will get better until people actually start
talking about this in public as if it really existed. Do any of you hear of all the crap that has happened
under this administration being talked about in public? Do people really talk politics in this country?
Not like they do in Europe. Where I live people avoid such Debbie Downer talk.
When people wake up pissed because they are facing the loss of their house and that reality is so thick
they can't shake it off even in the grocery store or at work then maybe we can find out if we still
have a democracy.

18. My dear kpete, I feel your sorrow. I really do.
It's exhausting. But it's not for naught. At least that is what I keep telling myself.

You are an amazing asset to this community, whether you like it or not, and all your wonderful posts provide me with an instant access to the daily news when I don't have time to sort through all the b.s. at the "MSMess" that we call the press.

However, I agree that it is insane that this criminal cabal still has control of all three branches of the government and have completely wreaked havoc on our justice system with their free-for-all branding of the law of our land. How anyone can't be aware is beyond me. We need to remember that when we go the polls in the primaries.

21. When Democrats show courage. Meaning, not in my lifetime.
Can any of you imagine any of the people being pushed as the Democratic candidate for 2008 standing face-to-face with Bush and challenging him on anything? Even the color of his tie? I didn't think so. It takes someone like Stephen Colbert, and he isn't running.

And before anyone asks, I mean ANY potential candidate. I'm not trying to shoot down the guy or gal whose picture is pasted on the ceiling above your head, in favor of anyone else. They're ALL losers. And because they are, so are we.
