Time for soldiers to consider: Refuse to Fight! Refuse to Kill!
When you hear the words of a man telling you to kill, remember instead the words of God: 'Thou shalt not kill!' No soldier is obliged to obey an order contrary to the law of God. In the name of God, in the name of our tormented people who have suffered so much and whose laments cry out to heaven, I beseech you, I beg you, I order you in the name of God, stop the repression!'"
Archbishop Oscar Romero, El Salvador, shortly before he was killed by the U.S. financed military junta.

Americans are now becoming aware of the massacre at Haditha, where 15 civilians were massacred, that took place in November. In March, the Knight Ridder news agency obtained an Iraqi police report accusing U.S forces of murdering 11 civilians by rounding them up them up into one room of a house near the city of Balad and shooting them. These are not isolated incidents. What is remarkable about them is that in each case there were honest journalists who uncovered the story, and persevered despite attempts to dismiss the story. But what happens when there are no journalists… they can’t be everywhere. Or what about the siege of Fallujah, where between 4,000 and 6,000 people were killed?

Most importantly, consider that the war itself is a war of aggression, based on known lies and deceptions.

No soldier is required to obey unlawful orders. In fact, it is her/his duty to refuse such orders.

It has come to the point where soldiers are being ordered to become professional killers. These incidents happened because of what these men have been ordered to do. To induce fear in the civilian population so it will submit to military occupation. It is the commanders who are fully responsible.
"Actually, it's a lot of fun to fight. You know, it's a hell of a hoot. ... It's fun to shoot some people. I'll be right upfront with you, I like brawling.'' Marine Corps Lt. Gen. James Mattis (Mattis is at present the commanding general of the Marine Corps Combat Development Command in Quantico, Va., and deputy commandant for combat development

There are choices, there is an alternative. Soldiers are choosing to lay down their arms and refuse participation in this illegal war. Yes, there is often a price to be paid for that action. However, there is also a community of support. Some are choosing to flee to Canada, where there is a very popular http://www.resisters.ca"> support group for military resisters there, and they will help resisters with the legal and practical needs (like housing). For military resisters who stay in the United States, there are also support groups.
Central Committee for Conscientious Objectors is one.
Courage to Resist is another.
Some have already taken this path, and you can find their stories here. One such story is that of Sgt. Kevin Benderman, who is serving a 15 month sentence for his refusal to continue in Bush’s war. More stories are coming.

It was resistance within the U.S. military that finally ended the Vietnam War. It will be a very important part of how we the people end the war in Iraq.

It is time that we at DU again reached out to our friends in the military and provided a haven of support for those who will be making very difficult decisions in the days ahead. We will do all we can to end this war. We will do all we can to make sure that veterans receive full services and medical care, for themselves and their families.
If you choose to resist, we will stand with you!

read (or watch) excellant Democracy Now! piece on the Haditha scandal, and cover-up.

1. Memorial Day writing by Monica Benderman, Kevin's wife
May 28, 2006

REMEMBER
Monica Benderman

They died – but it did not make us free.

They died because the citizens of the country for which they served would not stand to live by the principles on which their country was founded.

They died because the citizens of the country for which they served would not stand to hold their government officials accountable to the oaths of office they took.

They died because the citizens of this country refused to accept their responsibility in preserving the freedoms they so willingly claimed to be their right.

If we all have a right to the freedoms for which our American veterans have sacrificed, then we all have equal share in their defense.

They died for reasons as varied and as individual as the people they were when their uniforms came off.

They died for what they believed in – which is not always what we believe in.

They died because they had the courage to take a stand to defend the principles on which their country was founded, which allowed them the right to their beliefs.

They died because, regardless of their beliefs, they knew that it would not be by words alone that the citizens of this country could live in freedom – it would be by actions.

The freedoms belong to those who are willing to fight for them – and those freedoms are as individual as the men and women who fight and who are willing to put it all on the line for what they believe.

In the fight for true freedom weapons that kill are the weapons of last resort. The veterans who did take a stand would have done anything in their power to avoid having to use such weapons. The citizens of this country, by believing that the fight for their freedoms belonged to only a few, gave the veterans who served no other choice.

The respect and honor that this nation’s veterans deserve will require far more than a placing of flags and a calling of names.

The respect and honor due the veterans who sacrificed so greatly are far more than most American citizens seem willing to pay.

The respect and honor belonging to our American veterans will come when every American citizen stands on principle and remembers that true freedom is not free – nor can it be bought on the credit of another man’s life.

True freedom comes by earning it for ourselves – by taking a stand to defend what we believe, allowing others to do the same; realizing that in the sameness of humanity, we are none of us the same.

If you cannot take a personal stand for your freedom equal to that of our American veterans – then you do not deserve to raise a flag and name the name of one veteran who has put his life on the line for what they believed.

If you cannot take that stand – then the freedom you claim is nothing more than a ball and chain – and the freedom you claim is not what you believe.

Monica is the wife of US Army Sgt. Kevin Benderman, an Iraq war veteran who is currently serving a 15 month sentence at the Regional Corrections Facility, Ft. Lewis, WA for filing a Conscientious Objector application as his legal objection to war and the current direction this country has taken. 2. This post is a MUST read. K & R. I am a pacifist.
Edited on Tue May-30-06 08:12 PM by northamericancitizen
Reading your post, many questions came to my mind and my soul.

What would I do if there was a war here in Canada? If my son's life was threatened?

What would I do if I was an American?

I need to reread the words of the pacifists, hoping it will give me back some kind of hope.

Thank you.
