FORT LAUDERDALE | CRIME

1 dead after baseball-bat beating

Police are searching for the young men who, armed with baseball bats, attacked three homeless men, leaving one dead.

BY ASHLEY FANTZ AND WANDA J. DeMARZOafantz@MiamiHerald.com

The homeless man cowers on the ground as his attacker raises a baseball bat and slams it against his head. The man struggles to get up and is struck again. And again.

Stunned and bloody, he can barely sit up. The young men leave him on the ground and run.
These chilling images, from a video surveillance tape, captured one of the three vicious beatings of homeless men by a group of young men armed with baseball bats and sticks early Thursday morning in Fort Lauderdale.

One of the men was killed, and two were hospitalized, all within a couple hours of each other before dawn, police said.

The attackers remained on the loose, but investigators were interviewing possible witnesses, and hoped the surveillance tape would help identify the young thugs.

1. Some people are not wired the right way...
and are capable of inflicting immense suffering just for the sake of seeing somebody in pain.

5. The last paragraph in the article...

By far the most horrific crime against a homeless person in Florida happened last May near Daytona Beach in Holly Hill. Five teenagers -- ages 15 to 18 -- were charged with murdering a frail 53-year-old homeless man in the woods and inviting their friends to view his body.

Investigative reports released in September reportedly described teens seeing the body and experiencing a ``sugar rush.''

Four of the teens later pleaded guilty and are scheduled to be sentenced in February. A fifth still faces trial.

What the hell could make such young men so cold, so lacking in compassion or empathy? Teenage sociopaths.

12. This reminded me of an incident that occurred some 20 years ago or so
Edited on Fri Jan-13-06 03:39 PM by KansDem
...IIRC, give or take a few years. I don't remember much of the details, but a young man murdered his girlfriend and dumped her body down a ravine of a stream that ran through a city park. For one week, he invited his friends from school to view the body. Many of the friends dropped rocks on the body to see if she was really dead. This went on for one week and involved something like 20 students knowing about this. Finally, one of the kids told an adult and the police got involved.

Anyway, it was one of the first stories of its kind and a national embarrassment for the town in which it occurred.

I don't know any other details. Does this story sound familiar to any other DUers?

River's Edge

A group of high school friends must come to terms with the fact that one of them, Samson, killed another, Jamie. Reactions vary, as Layne is intent on protecting Samson and smuggling him out of the state, while others think it's best to go to the police. Matt's tough little brother also finds out about the body and no one knows quite how the police will learn about the murder or who will be blamed for it.

Bizarre tale...

Thanks and welcome to DU! :hi:

9. Well Well

This is the way it works in America....so many of us want to bully someone. Where is the willingness to meet a competent enemy on equal terms?

19. The violence is disturbing, but so are the plans for using prisons
for "political offenders."

Both come to mind these days in Bush's America.

Cold, calculated, premeditated murder (attempted in the second two cases). Life without parole for these bastards.
