Are the Confirmation Hearings Anything More Than PR for the Nominee?

The last three SCOTUS confirmation hearings have been little more than fawning from the party in power and ineffective nay-saying by the party out of power. Then nominee is not required to say anything on how he or she might feel about anything that could come before the court.

As Senator Biden pondered today, why have them. Let’s just go to the floor and have a vote. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060112/ap_on_go_co/alito_biden

That is the way it was prior to the late twenties. Advice and consent meant an up or down floor vote. Maybe, as Biden said, the system is broken right now.

1. YES, it's PR for the damn Senators!
IF you listened, you heard the Senators babbeling for a LONG time, about all sorts of complaints, but asking very few questions of the nominee!

Jon Stewart even had a routine last night about who was the winner! It was a Pub Senator who talked, or babbeled for 9 1/2 minutes before he had a question for Alito!

2. participation in a dog and pony show.
If nothing of substance will get discussed by the nominee the whole show serves no useful purpose.
