Couldn't possibly be true . . .
Yep, it is.

It was about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season, that I encountered my friend. He accosted me with excessive warmth, for he had been drinking much. The man wore motley. He had on a tight-fitting parti-striped dress and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells. I was so pleased to see him, that I thought I should never have done wringing his hand.

I said to him -- "My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met. How remarkably well you are looking to-day! But I have received a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, and I have my doubts."

"How?" said he, "Amontillado? A pipe? Impossible ? And in the middle of the carnival?"

"I have my doubts," I replied; "and I was silly enough to pay the full Amontillado price without consulting you in the matter. You were not to be found, and I was fearful of losing a bargain."

"Amontillado!"

"I have my doubts."

"Amontillado!"

"And I must satisfy them."

"Amontillado!"

"As you are engaged, I am on my way to Luchesi. If any one has a critical turn, it is he. He will tell me" --

"Luchesi cannot tell Amontillado from Sherry."

"And yet some fools will have it that his taste is a match for your own."

"Come let us go."

"Whither?"

"To your vaults."

4. Think about the end of the story!
Edited on Fri Jan-13-06 04:29 PM by Diogenes17
Just wishful thinking on my part, I guess.

On edit: I could just see a drunken Bushie dressed up in a jester's outfit -- come on down to the vault, George.

6. Hmmm - I'd think twice about going down into those "vaults"
Edited on Fri Jan-13-06 04:30 PM by SpiralHawk
Since the Skull & BonerCo in-chief took over with his Occult Krewe, things in the vault have been kind of skanky. You know, systematic torture prisons, and spying, and shit you don't want to get into.

So I would think again about partying in the vaults.

Just saying, you know.

7. Off topic:
I see you work in a university library and review books. Do you have any suggestions/links to book reviews (electronic) concerning anthropological theory? I have some serious reading to do before the semester starts!

9. Two or three quick answers . . .
Obviously, there's Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/homepage.html/104-4307070-0683108 -- though the reviews are going to be short;

Then there's BookPage http://www.bookpage.com/ -- though I don't think there's much anthropological theory there (at least none I've reviewed lately)

Finally, I would look into some Anthropological journals online; there's a nice little list here: http://www.ucpress.edu/journals/journals.htm -- though you may need to get to a library -- public or university -- to access them. Journals like this always have lots of book reviews.

11. Thanks
I am from and currently residing in New Orleans (sleeping on a moldy wooden floor), so going to the library is not possible at this time. In fact, I am currently running this computer on battery power since the electrical circuits in the house fried a day ago. I already have no gas, no hot water, no car, and unreliable Internet service. Anyway, thanks for your suggestions.

12. I hope you get this message, since it's been several hours . . .
Try the Tulane University Library -- I think it might be open now, and if it is like other university libraries, you can get in for free or a low fee (though it will probably cost to check out books) -- they would also have access to the journals you're looking for. Just an idea. Good luck.

10. Now his audiences have been reduced to
Mere painted backdrops. It's a good representation of a Freeper, though.
