Former Pa. Congressman Reacts To Santorum's Residency Claims
Sen. Rick Santorum (news, bio, voting record) launched his political career 16 years back by unseating then-Rep. Doug Walgren with an aggressive attack on the issue of whether Walgren really lived in a home in the area.
"And I've talked to his neighbors. His parents live there. He does not live there," Santorum said years back.
"What goes around, comes around. And he finds himself sort of in the same situation that he put me in at that time," Walgren said.
Channel 4 Action News reporter Bob Mayo tracked down Walgren in Pittsburgh. He has been silent as Santorum critics challenge the senator's residency in Penn Hills in light of the Santorum family home in Virginia.
"The truth is that when you have young children as I did then, and as he does now, you really live in Washington. There's no other way to meet both your responsibilities to your district and to your family than to do that," Walgren said.
Does that mean Walgren feels sympathy for Santorum?
"Well, I don't know that sympathy would be the right word. Even now," Walgren said.
Santorum's staff told Mayo that Santorum didn't have children when he made his 1990 pledge to live in his district.
