So basically the U.S. & it's Soldiers are TRAPPED in Iraq.
Trapped. I've seen this word used in regard to our current position there.

I always thought that when you were trapped, there was absolutely no way out, all attempts at escape have failed or are impossible, trapped means you CAN'T possibly get out.

I say we are willingly trapped, but not actually trapped. But the war mongers would have you believe that we are literally trapped in Iraq.

2. They are POLITICALLY trapped. Because U.S. politicians, esp. Repubs
but also many Dems, refuse to attach their names to "leaving in disgrace". It'll happen, but as long as someone else's name is on it...
