Pennsylvania Senate: Casey by 23%. Bye, Bye Ricky
Rasmussen Reports, May 31, 2006

The latest Rasmussen Reports election poll in Pennsylvania shows Republican Senator Rick Santorum solidifying his standing as the most vulnerable congressional incumbent this election season.

Santorum now trails Democratic challenger Bob Casey 56% to 33% (Ouch).

It couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

8. Rendell Opens Big Lead
May 25, 2006

Governor Ed Rendell (D) has opened his biggest lead of the season over challenger and political newcomer Lynn Swann (R). After being neck-and-neck with Swann in the previous four Rasmussen Reports Pennsylvania election polls, Rendell now holds an 18-point advantage, 52% to 34%.

6. Be careful about tempting fate
Not to mention the fact that the Republicans probably have all kinds of plans to prevent Democratic votes from counting on election day, a la Ohio 2004.

10. I also suspect a Rasmussen bias, but not in this case.
I think they're accurate in this one. Before this updated Rasmussen poll came out, the latest was a Quinnipiac University dated 5/11/06. It gave 36% to Santorum and 49% to Casey.

I have been updating the 2006 US Senate Races page in the Research Forum to reflect the latest polling results for competitive races, but I haven't been doing it long.

12. Rick Santorum has already sicced his "swiftboaters" on Casey
The slimy "Americans for Job Security" has been running ads attacking Casey for at least a week here in PA:

A VIRGINIA-based group that refuses to identify its contributors is throwing another $400,000 into the U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania.

The Americans for Job Security, classified by the Internal Revenue Service as a "nonprofit business association," is hitting the Philadelphia television market with an advertisement that criticizes the attendance record of Democratic state Treasurer Bob Casey.

The same group spent nearly $1 million last year for TV ads praising Casey's Republican opponent, U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, for his work on Social Security and tax issues.

The new ads allege that Casey "skipped work more than 43 percent of the time... . Just three months after being sworn in as treasurer, Bob Casey was already skipping work to look for another job."

What I do not understand is how they can have non-profit status when they are clearly campaigning for Santorum. And they also refuse to reveal who is funding their organization. But according to opensecrets.org, AJS is "closely linked with the insurance and health care industries."
