The microcosm of Deadwood?
The new season's coming and I started thinking about the similarities between parties and the two antagonists, Swearingen & Hearst, with the rough and callous Swearingen similar to the Dems and the robotic ruthless Hearst very like the Repugs.

ANyone else dipped into this?

1. Nah. Swearingen is immoral, but feisty.

2. He is... But (spoiler alert)
But with a strong feeling of wrong and right as in his treatment of Hearst's pychopath and Chinese bully.

4. and his mercy on the preacher
that wrenched my gut. Loved the preacher and loved how he and Jane interacted. Jane is most definitely a dem!

10. His scene of a mercy killing of the preacher, and on the same episode
a scene that the Doc had a rant about the pain and suffering humans have to go throught was among the best I have ever seen on TV. They were superb scenes, superbly acted.

6. Not so in love with the character (in spite of the actor's charm)
Edited on Sat Jun-03-06 04:44 PM by robbedvoter
I am watching the show in fits of delight and disgust. Then again, I am watching the dems with almost the same attitudes, so maybe you've got something there.
I mentioned "feisty" - because Dems are anything but. I also dislike the parallel because Swaringen is obviously fighting a losing battle - while the dems have history on their side.

21. Like most of the characters on the show, Swearingen
was a real person; he came to Deadwood in 1877 and set up "shop" (tavern and theater, with brothel benefits thrown in). He was every bit the scoundrel POS SOB as portrayed in the show, in fact, he was often worse. And his death was pure poetic justice. He lost everything, despite the literally millions of dollars he made, due to a fire, bad business decisions, bad treatment of the wrong people, and other "unfortunate" events (the wife he mercilessly beat all the time disappeared with a large amount of his bank assets during his convalescence from an illness) and died penniless, murdered by a fellow transient in a Denver railyard.

After having some business with the County Commisioner,
he commented: "I am a sinner who does not expect redemption, but I am not a government official!"

They suggest that fans vote with their subscriptions: if HBO cancels Deadwood, cancel HBO.

HBO is one of the very few indulgences we allow ourselves, and would have cancelled already if not for Deadwood. If Deadwood goes, we go.

An unsuccessful Democratic candidate (1885) for U.S. Senator, George Hearst was later appointed (1886) and then elected (1888) to the Senate.

16. That is one of our favorite Deadwood lines in this household
Edged out by a small margin by "Shut. The fuck. Up!" often repeated during the TV appearances of Bush and other GOP slime.

The scene where Jane is goes to get water for fever-racked Andy left to die in the woods? I love that actress and that role. Superb.

Gerald McRaney plays Hearst
http://www.legendsofamerica.com/WE-DeadwoodHBO.html

Hearst, George (hûrst) , 1820–91, American mining magnate, U.S. Senator (1886–91), b. Franklin co., Mo. He went to California in 1850 and became a mining prospector and geologist. He successfully selected and invested in numerous mining properties, notably the Ontario in Utah, the Ophir in Nevada, the Homestake in South Dakota, and the Anaconda in Montana. He bought (1880) the San Francisco Examiner, which his son William Randolph Hearst managed after 1887. An unsuccessful Democratic candidate (1885) for U.S. Senator, George Hearst was later appointed (1886) and then elected (1888) to the Senate. His wife, Phoebe Apperson Hearst, 1842–1919, became a prominent philanthropist and donated freely to the Univ. of California for buildings, expeditions, and facilities.

Born near Sullivan, Missouri, he attended public school and graduated from the Franklin County Mining School in 1838; nevertheless, he is remembered as "almost illiterate" <1>, with a taste for poker, bourbon, and tobacco.

Upon news of the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill, Hearst moved to California (according to some reports, he walked the entire way). After arriving in 1850, he became a highly successful prospector, and otherwise engaged in mining, stock raising and farming in Nevada County. <2> As head of Hearst, Haggin, Tevis and Co., he had interests in the Comstock Lode in Nevada, the Ophir mine in Nevada, the Ontario silver mine in Utah, the Homestake gold mine in South Dakota (his pursuit of which is portrayed in the HBO television series Deadwood), and the Anaconda copper mine in Montana. (A later investment was the Cerro de Pasco Mine in Peru.) The company grew to be the largest private firm of mine-owners in the United States. Hearst himself acquired the reputation of being the most expert prospector and judge of mining property on the Pacific coast, and contributed to the development of the modern processes of quartz and other kinds of mining. Another of his holdings, that his son insisted on taking control of, was the San Francisco Examiner, which later became the foundation of the Hearst publishing empire.

He moved to San Francisco in 1862, and married Phoebe Apperson. She gave birth to their only child, William Randolph Hearst, in 1863. Hearst was a member of the California State Assembly from 1865 until 1866. During this time he acquired the 48,000 acre (194 km²) Piedras Blancas Ranch at San Simeon, California in 1865. He later bought the adjoining ranches, and this land eventually became the site of the famed Hearst Castle.
