1. its multipurpose: distract from present war, distract from impending war,
distract from sagging poll numbers, getting the rightwing nutjobs to vote in the midterm election, yadda yadda yadda.

you know, its sad that even 30% of americans should be so easily snowed by such transparently obvious tactics. I would have thought americans were not that naive. I was wrong.

2. It looks real desperate, which should frighten us all.
In fact, we should all feel pretty well terrorized by now.

3. Well, not exactly...
It's really more of a political campaign tactic. Force candidates to vote for or against the amendment before the elections so it can be used as a campaign sound bite. The DeWine/Brown senate race is a prime example. DeWine(R) is fighting for his seat against Representative Brown (D) who has been pretty popular in his district. Brown is a strong supporter of gay rights - Rs want DeWine on the record as not only voting for the amendment, but sponsoring it so it can be used to provide a clear reason for the fundie homophobes to go to the polls and vote for DeWine.

In others where the D is the sitting senator, a vote against the amendment will almost certainly be a focal point of the campaign - so does the sitting senator vote for the amendment to avoid giving his opponent a strong (based on how well it worked in 04) campaign tool? In this case the Rs also know that a vote for the amendment risks disgusting part of the base of support (note the talk about boycotting the Cox election in Georgia) - so it's a double win.

Not much to do with diverting us from war news, really.

5. But he ALWAYS makes speeches about the wonderful war.
Occassionally Social Security, but mostly just war war war, his number one issue and goal. Yet he takes network time to announce that all good Americans should hate and fear Homosexuals.

10. November elections are right around the corner
from a political perspective, and I am sure he is being pressured to do something to help undo the damage he has done to the re-election campaigns of countless republicans. Driving right wing voters to the polls to vote out/against those who support (or can be portrayed as supporting) gays worked well in 2004, so we're seeing a repeat.

And the wonderful war is not such a hot selling point for republicans right now.

11. Are they worried about the elections? I thought they controlled those too
But you're right, they are trolling for votes, and they only need a certain number to win.

6. Do ya think????????????
nah..couldn't be. Bush** co wouldn't want to divert attention away from his Super-Terrific poll numbers and that totally summer of fun War on Terror. and they wouldn't want us to forget for one little second all the of whipsmart coolio scandals of Tom DeLay, Scooter Libby, Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, etc...

Gosh with all that good news to spread, why would they take on anything thorny like Gay Marriage?

7. Will someone please explain to me
how banning Gay Marriage lower the cost of gas? How will it pay for my health care? How will preventing two people in love and of the same sex from being united in holy matrimony bring back all the high paying jobs that have been shipped overseas in the past years?

How the hell can amending the Constitution in this manner help us win the War of Terror?
