Watched "The Devil's Arithmetic" - are we capable of acting like this??
Do I really think that BushCo is capable of the atrocities that the Nazis did every day?? I tell myself that there is NO WAY that we, as Americans, could allow this type of brutality and inhumanity. But I listen to Hannity say that we, the Democrats, are the enemy, and traitors and treasonous. And Savage say that liberals are mentally ill, and Coulter say that liberals should be talked to with a baseball bat. And I look at how some of our Marines and our soldiers have been treating Iraqis, and it makes me very nervous.

Are we capable of this??

1. Of course we are.
The whole take-home point of learning about Nazis is to realize it can happen any where.

9. But have enough Americans forgotten the lessons we learned
to be able to treat other human beings as less than human??

I know, even asking that question, I know the answer.

2. the mere fact that ann coulter gets airtime is proof it CAN happen here
she has openly advocated murdering selected americans ("liberals") and, to date, not one banana republican has denounced her violent statements, afaik.

3. exactly -- Dems are made to wear hair shirts if they vaguely
insinuate the GOP may be destroying this country, while the Repubbies can openly call for jihad against the rest of us, and are never brought to account.

You give these fascist bastards an inch, and they take --

well, they take just about everything...

4. Oh yes
Germany was a place scholars went to study. Beautiful music came from there as did great literature, scientific study and discovery. It is said that if we ignore history, we are doomed to repeat it. I believe Rove has not only studied Nazi history, he is patterning this administration after it. He is using every tactic and plan to take complete control of this country. We will have no liberty or freedoms and I do believe the Halliburton prison camps are the new concentration camps. People will disappear. And I know this is tin foil hat territory, but I think the Bird Flu will play a part in people disappearing. They will be taken away for "quarantine" to these camps.

10. So is the Second Amendment the next to go??
I think that if the Bush administration goes after the second amendment, then much of what you say may come to pass. We are too violent a people for them to just start raiding the homes of Americans.

5. Oh yes, it can happen here.

Echoing the words of Frank Zappa, it cant happen here. But it is a very real possibility. The fact that TV talking head douchebags like Hannity, O'Reilly, and Savage have all but declared war on liberals is one fact. The fact that we continue to let corporate tools like Neil Cavuto tell us what to think and that our megachurches are not only growing in numbers, but are getting scarier by the day and repeatedly telling its members that things like abortion and homosexuality are wrong, it could happen here. A really creepy example of this is the Left Behind video game (see this week's Top 10 for more).

Not to mention the fact that Pepsi and Coke virtually control what we see on television anymore...

It's stuff like this that makes me want to get the hell out of this country.

6. Absolutely. Being American doesn't make a difference.
Believing the misconception that it can't happen here because we are "better" than the Germans of the 1930's is dangerous. In fact those who would do such things (Bushco) are depending on us to think that way so they can get away with it.

11. Not better - different - we tend to be a rebellious people
who don't like to be told what to do. Now, has American Idol and McDonalds knocked that out of us?? That, I think, is what my real question should have been.

15. Maybe - we'll have to see.
Our rebellious nature may not manifest itself against our government unless things get bad enough - unless we are forced to look outside our own little bubbles.

There was a poll I read not too long ago and I'm sorry but I don't think I can find the source. People were asked - if you had a choice between free cable TV or civil liberties for life - which would you choose? The majority picked cable.

12. So sad, so heartbreaking
When the men were hanged, and the baby taken away - my God, to think that people could have done those things, and I was so disturbed to think that we are killing little girls in Iraq.

13. That is pretty scary - that people will just do as they are told
even if it hurts someone else.

16. Oh, yes. We've done so in the past many times.
Not that Americans are unique in their passion for killing. We're just better at justifying it and making it respectable.
