On June 28th, 1969 a group of drag queens refused to tolerate police persecution at a NYC bar and started the modern gay rights movement.
Since that time, June has been recognized as Gay Pride month. Cities across the nation are holding events to give honor and recognition to their gay citizens. It's a time to celebrate our lives, honor those who came before us, and renew our determination to live without fear.
Bill Clinton regularly issued a proclamation declaring June to be Gay Pride month; Bush has refused to do this in any year of his presidency.
Today, in the midst of Gay Pride month, Bush insulted, offended, and stuck his nasty little finger in our collective eyes by choosing to make his homophobic remarks during a time each year when we affirm our self-worth, our citizenship, and our dignity. Picking the beginning of Pride month to gay bash is one sick fucking thing to do on so many levels I can hardly express it. It's an insult to our history and our struggle. It's personal. And he meant it to be that way.
As much as I hate his warmongering, his elitism, his incompetence and his buffoonery I'll always hate him, personally and specifically, for this. This deliberate, belittling, berating, mocking, heckling insult to millions of gay Americans...in June.
