The problem with "wedge issues" is that legislation written about/for them are usually so weirdly written, they will most likley be overturned and left kicking for another try....and some of them are written to be constitutional amendments. If something as truly important as NOW was never ratified by enough states, what makes people think that these flim-flam "issues" will fare any differently?

Most of them involve only two choices and are absolutely no-brainers. I think he was trying to make the point that most people, at least among his viewers, could care less about gay marriage.:-)

Angry about those illegal furriners a-comin' in here an' takin' all the good-payin' leaf-blowin' jobs from "hard-workin'" Americans. The anger over immigration may at best reflect xenophobia and at worst latent racism, but at least it is not hate and bigotry as public policy. Making it one whole level of behavioral integrity above America's journalistic establishment.

Lou Dobbs amazingly ends up the only journalist contemptuously giving the back of his hand to Republican cynical hot-button diversions, like this second run at amending the Constitution to enshrine bigotry. The only one. The rest of the 'mainstream' media pays fealty to whatever bullshit Bush and the twisted Republicans put in front of them to play against progressives.

So the barely-aware Republican Lou Dobbs is left standing alone doing the job of the entire depraved institution of American journalism using things like this poll.

He has pushed the anti-immigration issue so hard that a large segment of his audience have knee-jerk reactions to immigration being the most important subject. Ignore Illegal Immigration and Border security to get an idea of what most people think is important. Then again, it isn't even a scientific poll, so just ignore the whole thing!

and so that's what his viewers care most about. But he also is opposed to the war in Iraq (my vote) and supports health care and education. That's the reason that they made his list. He just put something like gay marriage there because he knew that it would get hardly any votes and he could say so on national television. :-)
