A Solution for ANWR
In general, I am in favor of preserving the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, but I recognize that it will not remain protected forever. There are too many economic pressures insisting on its development. The arrival of peak oil, whether it comes in the near term or 20-30 years in the future, will make the billions of barrels of oil in ANWR an irresistible prize. Knowing that these resources will be developed sooner or later, it is wise to put a plan in place that will cause the least amount of damage possible to this wilderness area.

For conservationists like myself, it is tempting to view everything through an aesthetic lens. An unspoiled landscape is beautiful to the human eye. Ironically, this may be because it awakens something in our evolutionary past that sees an unspoiled landscape as fresh territory, where one's family or tribe can settle and enjoy the rich, untouched resources.

1. I see what you're saying
but I don't agree that we can't fight to keep the greedy hands off ANWR. It will destroy it and for the paltry amount of oil it would yield (I heard a 9 month supply), it's just not worth ruining pristine beauty and wildlife for. It's time these oil freaks realize the big oil baron days are coming to an end, the party's over and it's more than time to begin to utilize other forms of energy, like biodiesel.

I do not think conservationists should give an inch to these &^*#*^%% buggers!

3. There's enough oil in ANWR to last the U.S. 6-8 months tops

And there's no guarantee that the oil would even be used in America if it's tapped. ANWR is merely a big profit push by greedy oil companies and their whores in Congress. It will do nothing to end our oil woes.

The short term answer is more fuel efficient cars and power plants that don't use fossil fuel. Make it law that every new car on the road must get 30 miles to the gallon or above. Fuck SUV drivers and Hummer driving losers if they got a problem with this. We have a national and global emergency going on that requires us to make some sacrifices. Other possibilities for power plants include clean burning coal technology, hydrogen, solar, wind, geothermal, or (gulp) even nuclear.

The long term answer is cars that don't run on fossil fuel. A massive project spared no expense. Nobody is going to convince me that that's not possible. All we need is the will to do so.
