Mary Cheney's book a flop -- the numbers
FYI Bookscan reports about 60% of total sales.

"She got a reported $1 million advance. She has had a blitzkrieg of publicity. And according to Bookscan's data yesterday, she sold a total of 1,633 books last week. Her year-to-date sales are 4,091."

8. No. Advances are not returnable.
She gets to keep the advance. It's the publisher who gets screwed.

22. "It's the publisher who gets screwed"
Wonderful! I hope the publisher goes belly up. They deserve it for serving up a piece of trash like that and even more so for giving such a sorry excuse for a human being $1 million upfront.

10. Very unlikely

An advance is a prepayment of royalties, the bit of money the author makes every time a new copy of the book is sold. At first, the royalties are kept by the publisher to pay for the advance; once the advance is paid up, the author begins to receive a check every so often for continued royalties. If the book doesn't sell well enough to pay the advance... that is the publisher's loss for being overly optimistic about the book and paying too large an advance. Once the author has the advance, only breach of contract (such as not providing a manuscript fit to publish) would force repayment. Once the manuscript is accepted for publication, the contract is fulfilled and the author's obligations are met.

15. In RW publishing, advances are not pre-payment of royalties.
They know there will be no royalties to speak of. They are a way for RW publishers to funnel hundreds of thousands of dollars to the party faithful, often in advance of a political campaign. The candidate gets the money, the publisher gets a write-off, and everybody's happy.

So what is Mary Cheney running for?

19. Simon and Schuster was the publisher.
Threshold Editions is an imprint of them, with Mary Matalin as editor in chief. I can't see this as helping them -- makes Matalin look like a lousy editor. Which I imagine she is.

5. Sometimes books aren't written for people to read them
They are written to give an excuse for the 'author' to do the rounds on TV talk shows.

6. The publishing push on this book was phenomenal
At every B&N and Borders I visited, her book was front and center on display, with huge numbers in stock. Not only did the publisher pay to have a humongous print run, they also paid a lot of money for bookstore "co-op." The death of this book may signify the fading away of right-wing publishing in general.

12. I can't imagine exactly who they thought would buy it in the first place
Talk about a book with no audiance! Would conservatives buy it? No. Would liberals Buy it? No. Would the gay community buy it? No.

21. Her marketing strategy was way off
She panders to the right - who don't buy into her "lifestyle". She slams the left who do see all people as people. She blew off her market. This, of course, does not take into the angle of self-loathing gays in todays philosophy.
