What's up with Geno's Cheesesteaks?? Meh...
Yahoo story - very disheartening...

"English only at Philly cheesesteak joint"

PHILADELPHIA - Bistec con queso? Not at Geno's Steaks.

An English-only ordering policy has thrust one of Philadelphia's best-known cheesesteak joints into the national immigration debate.

Situated in a South Philadelphia immigrant neighborhood, Geno's — which together with its chief rival, Pat's King of Steaks, forms the epicenter of an area described as "ground zero for cheesesteaks" — has posted small signs telling customers, "This Is AMERICA: WHEN ORDERING `SPEAK ENGLISH.'"

"They don't know how lucky they are. All we're asking them to do is learn the English language," said Geno's owner Joseph Vento, 66. "We're out to help these people, but they've got to help themselves, too."

Vento, whose grandparents struggled to learn English after immigrating from Sicily in the 1920s, said he posted the sign about six months ago amid concerns over immigration reform and the increasing number of customers who could not order in English when they wanted Philly's gooey, greasy specialty — fried steak, sliced or chopped, in a long roll, with cheese and fried onions.

This is very sad. I've been to Geno's - it's fucking great. Great food for a good price. They do, however, seem like overt freepers with their "freedom fries" and obsessive pro-cop (ie - cops are always good, do no wrong) attitude. But this is really pathetic. Especially that the owner's grandparents came from Sicily and struggled with English. Gonna have to head over to Pat's Steaks now across the street when I head back to Philly some day - Jim's Steaks are really good too. But no more Genos.

1. From the same story:
"Vento, a short, fiery man with a ninth-grade education..."

Ignorance breeds hate.

2. I'll bet his grandparents frequented shops that spoke Italian to them
Oh, the irony.

People oughta send him complaint letters in ITALIAN
...with a translation, in case Nona or Nono aren't still with us to translate for him. Ignorant bastard.

I'll cross that joint off my list next time I'm in town.

4. Power and control, even a little, makes them feel
superior, imo.

5. I only speak English, but if someone came in who
did not speak English, I'll still try and figure out what they wanted. Why would they want to send business away?

Morans.

Hope they go out of business!

6. So screw 'em...
Pat's or Jim's on South Street are just fine. And you know what? You'll live longer if you eat fewer of these things...they are unbelievably bad for your health and I should know...I've eaten hundreds in my lifetime - used to eat TWO when I was in school.

Or...go down to THe White House in Atlantic City...best Hoagie in America with the exception of some little places in South Philly that you probably couldn't find with a GPS device.
