Rush and Sean both like to battle imaginary "Liberal" stances
Sometimes I just have to indulge a masochistic urge and listen briefly to Sean and Rush as I drive about. Which I did today. They both argued eloquently against imaginary viewpoints of imaginary "liberals". Most of which were specious variations of how Liberals would be unhappy about al-Zarqawi because the US accomplished a military goal today which set back their agenda. They both kept offering variations of "I'm sure Liberals can't wait to ask . . .argue . . . and then inserted their stupidest talking points that they WISH some Democrat or "Liberal" will say.

1. If you can't best a real liberal, substitute an ineffectual strawman ...
SOP for wingnut "pundits."

Description of Straw Man
The Straw Man fallacy is committed when a person simply ignores a person's actual position and substitutes a distorted, exaggerated or misrepresented version of that position. This sort of "reasoning" has the following pattern:

Person A has position X.
Person B presents position Y (which is a distorted version of X).
Person B attacks position Y.
Therefore X is false/incorrect/flawed.
This sort of "reasoning" is fallacious because attacking a distorted version of a position simply does not constitute an attack on the position itself. One might as well expect an attack on a poor drawing of a person to hurt the person.

Examples of Straw Man

Prof. Jones: "The university just cut our yearly budget by $10,000."
Prof. Smith: "What are we going to do?"
Prof. Brown: "I think we should eliminate one of the teaching assistant positions. That would take care of it."
Prof. Jones: "We could reduce our scheduled raises instead."
Prof. Brown: " I can't understand why you want to bleed us dry like that, Jones."

"Senator Jones says that we should not fund the attack submarine program. I disagree entirely. I can't understand why he wants to leave us defenseless like that."

Bill and Jill are arguing about cleaning out their closets:
Jill: "We should clean out the closets. They are getting a bit messy."
Bill: "Why, we just went through those closets last year. Do we have to clean them out everyday?"
Jill: "I never said anything about cleaning them out every day. You just want too keep all your junk forever, which is just ridiculous."

3. Can either of them name one fact they have been right about in 6 years?
WMDs?

Saddam =9/11?

Terry Schivo (a hoax)?

Bush can protect us (See katrina & 9/11)?

No, I dont think they can. That goes for most Republicans.

I would tell Rush or Sean to call me back once they can get one single assetion right.

4. They're both mass producers of straw men
They should each open up a factory.

I keep wondering when I'll meet one of these "libruls". They're nothing like what I am.

6. Not too sure how they feel, but

I'm glad Al Zarqawi is dead. He was a real bad guy and deserves what he got. I sure hope this doesn't upset hannity and limbaugh. You know, some crazy liberal glad that a criminal is dead. The thing is, it really doesn't change anything. The "insurgency" will likely be determined to kill more Americans because their leader will be a martyr, in their minds. That is not good.
