2. Interesting
I hadn't thought about the Democrats having wedge issues, if that is defined by an issue that doesn't really effect the running of the country but gets the base's blood boiling, like the anti-gay amendment the repukes are touting. Have the Dems really come out with a wedge issue? I really haven't heard much at all from the leadership-you showing that the repukes and Dems (in Congress, I assume) being one and the same is, sadly, often true.

3. by definition a wedge issue
is one that divides. Where it originates from doesn't matter.

Once a wedge has been established it's up to the opposing party to take some sort of stand. If the opposing party doesn't take a stand then the issue is not a wedge.

what we have with the wedge issues is one party saying if they don't STAY in power then issue "x" won't/will be addressed in a manner that is expected by it's base.

The opposing party is saying the same thing.

to use the Gay marriage Ban as an example - the republicans are telling their base that if THEY (the repubs) don't stay in power then the Dems are either going to let "activist judges" determine the law or the Dems will not address this issue at all. The underlying message is that they are for saving the family, and the family is being threatened by Mike and Joe or Irene and Wendy getting married.

The Dems, on the other hand are saying if they (the Dems) DON'T gain control then the repubs will keep pushing the Gay marriage ban until it's passes. The underlying message is that they are for equal rights for all people, and our freedom is being threatened by bigotry and prejudice.
