South Florida cop in trouble for mocking and harassing anti-abortionists
Sunrise police have launched an internal affairs investigation into allegations that an off-duty officer harassed volunteers at a event last weekend at which a conservative Christian group was collecting signatures for a ban on gay marriage.

Several off-duty Sunrise officers worked the event last weekend at the BankAtlantic Center organized by Promise Keepers, a Denver-based men's ministry.

According to John Stemberger, president and general counsel of the Florida Family Policy Council, one officer -- Sgt. Stephen Allen -- verbally harassed and threatened to arrest him Saturday and told his volunteers they couldn't distribute petitions on private property.

The Florida Family Policy Council's website posted a photo, snapped by one of the volunteers, that shows Allen, appearing to kiss another officer on the cheek in a pose that the nonprofit group said was mocking them. The other officer in the photo is identified as Detective Michael Allard.

1. I Like Sgt Allen
He seems to have the same sense of propriety that runs in my family. Good for him.

3. And yes, I'll have to third that
I had to post it in GD instead of Late Breaking News because the headline of the article was vague about what he actually did. Something like this deserves to be read by the DU masses.

4. I second the ACLU.
The Miami Herald article quotes the ACLU's Howard Simon as follows:

Howard Simon, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida, said he hadn't heard from both sides, but he believes the incident merits a police investigation.

''If the police officer feels so strongly, then I think they need to take off their uniform, leave and join a peaceful, counterdemonstration,'' Simon said.

Simon added, ``But when they are in uniform, they have an obligation to protect everybody's constitutional rights, including the rights of a group that is trying to amend the constitution to discriminate against a class of Florida citizens.''

I'll second that.

7. I don't.
I agree with his position but I don't admire his purported behavior. I shouldn't have a clue about his position.

9. In a world where the "liberal" media is right-wing
And everybody who is supposed to be objective is far from it, it's always nice to see some of that bias fall on the left side every now and then.

But having said all that, he is an adult and should not be surprised by the consequences.

However, I would have loved to seen the expression on the faces of the anti-abortionists.

He wasn't even in uniform! Damn these fascists!:puke:

EDIT: Ok, so he was in uniform. I just read the "off duty" part, and assumed. He's cute though!
