Ann Coulter is to punditry what Dennis Rodman was to pro basketball.....
In a manner of speaking. But before I get involved with my analogy, let me state: Dennis Rodman WAS a good basketball player. However, that's not where my comparison lies. That being said, please follow:

Ann Coulter has mastered the game of outrageous one-upmanship. And people are falling for it, just like the sports/entertainment media did with Rodman and his antics in the 90's.

Remember this kind of sports news chatter?

"Oooh. Red polka dot and striped hair. That's outageous.
"What? He bedded Madonna? That's outrageous!"
"He did what? Rode on a motorcycle in a wedding dress, then married himself? That's OUTRAGEOUS!"

Each one was a little bit more outrageous than the one before. That was the only way he could keep himself in front of the media, and keep the words "Dennis Rodman" on the tongues of the sport talk bobble heads on the sports channels and sports talk radio.

Now fast forward a few years...

"Ann Coulter says that Democrats are wrong on everything? That's outrageous."
"She said what? Liberals are treasonous? Well, that's outrageous!"
"Liberals and Democrats are GODLESS? Well, that's OUTRAGEOUS!"

See a pattern?

As long as we keep feeding the beast, it will get bigger. I'm not saying that we should organize boycotts, start demonstrations and protests, and inundate the media with threats of economic retaliation. They rarely work. I'm not even going to advocate that you do anything.

My course of action? I'm going to ignore her. She'll eventually fade away into a well deserved anonymity, and be thrown onto the political pundit waste pile, kinda like toe sucking Dick Morris, never to be taken seriously again. Sure, she'll soon concoct one of those phoney "I was attacked by a Godless liberal in the bathroom at the airport!" stories (trying to garner sympathy and free PR), a la Morton Downey, Jr., but no one will believe her.

She'll just slither away, returning to the slime in which she resides, spending her days yelling at the neighborhood children for keeping an open mind...

1. You mean she'll try and marry herself?
I actually think that may be far more applicable than with Rodman.

2. I'm calling Bullshit!
Dennis "kept himself in front of the media, and keep the words "Dennis Rodman" on the tongues of the sport talk bobble heads on the sports channels and sports talk radio" was by being the league's leading rebounder year after year!

It doesn't take much effort to criticize as you must know.

6. I'll see your bullshit, and raise you a "meh."
:-)

I agree with your point that he was a GOOD basketball player. I stated that in my original post. Hell, I would have loved to see him play for MY favorite team. He was a fucking rebounding machine. But that's not the point that I was making.

I am speaking only of his odd behavior and his general "look at me, I'm OUTRAGEOUS" persona, and the need to outdo himself everytime he thought of a new stunt.

And I wasn't criticizing anyone but Ann Coulter in my post. As you must know.

8. I Read It
But, i was just disputing the title! Yeah, she's a freak show, like Dennis became, but at least he had something other than the freak show. She's got NOTHING else. She's got the logic of a mushroom, and the manners of a wildebeast.

;)

Didn't mean to intentionally sully the name of The Worm.

Just trying to make an analogy that people could relate to. That's all.

13. Rodman is a decent person
The comparison is to Fred Phelps. Getting nastier, crazier and more outrageous to keep himself and his insane, hate-filled ideas in the newspapers.

He's a nut. A harmless nut, but still a nut.

The Fred Phelps comparison? Has truth to it. I applaud your analogy.:applause:

Jim Hightower
Molly Ivins
Kevin Phillips (oh, sorry, he's a conservative who hates boooosh. I'm counting him anyway)
Paul Krugman
Mark Crispin Miller
David Brock (Oh, another "conservative" who saw the light)
Richard Clarke

Better stop now, or by the time I post this our little friend will be gone.

Tansy Gold, who is just snarky enough this morning to say she's glad she finally got to see one of "those people" before they were, um, removed.

28. You said --
Ann Coulter is exactly what Republicans should be all about.
People dont like Ann Coulter because she speaks the truth unlike most conservatives right now. I think she is a breath of fresh air and many many people like her and agree with her. When was the last time a liberal author sold as many books as she and some other conservative authors have sold?

So hate sells. Other haters buy it. The culture of hate is what you are building and nothing more. You don't think for yourself much, do you?

Buh Bye ... go peddle hate somewhere else. WE aren't buying it.

16. Not buying this comparison
Rodman was, ummmm, colorful. And his color was an adjunct to the basketball talent which provided his livlihood.

Coulter expresses views that appear to be intentionally hateful, controversial and divisive. Those views are the source of her livlihood.

There is a difference between being colorful and being controversial. Not to say that they are mutually exclusive, of course.

There is also a difference between expressing oneself in an outlandish fashion and profiteering by offending folks. Not to say that some folks aren't offended by outlandish conduct, of course. To me this would be the big distinction between the two.
