Looking for a comparative study of property taxes across the country.
I am trying to find out what property tax trends are across the country but I am confused on how to do this since it seems every jurisdiction has a different way of assessing taxable assessment values, tax scales and then of course so many overlapping tax districts (schools, libraries, etc.). There has to be a comprehensive resource out there, almost like a map that can tell you how much property tax is paid on a 200K home, a 500K home, a 1M commercial property, etc. based on zip code, etc.

Any advice? Any leads?

1. Use resources for each state...
tax rates are by town/city.

2. Here is one...

Never used it personally, but seems user friendly.

3. thanks...
actually, i just found another good resource is www.zillow.com.... it doesn't give you a statistical breakdown of the tax rate but it is great for sampling various parts of the country.

4. I don't know if this will help...
I'm not sure this is exactly what you are looking for but I used these to compare and contrast a lot of statistical issues with regard to property taxes, education, poverty, etc. I can tell you that the state of AL has by far the lowest property taxes in the country as well one of the most regressive state tax systems.

These are great resources, but I'm not sure they are exactly what you are looking for:

Hopefully, they would be available at the library also.

5. You can't make this comparison. Some states have property tax refunds
and so the property tax assessed for a property is not representative of the property tax paid. In MN for example, along with your state income taxes, you can file for a property tax refund which is prorated based on your income (and dependents).
