TIME Magazine cover goes wingnutty...
Edited on Tue Jun-13-06 01:07 AM by Julius Civitatus
Seriously, it takes right-wing rhetoric and historical manipulation to a whole new level.

This is the cover of this week's TIME magazine, as it will appear in your newsstands all over the nation:

To understand the significance of that cover, understand this: TIME magazine has only used that type of imagery before (defeated enemy with a crossed mark on top) in three occasions: when Hitler was defeated, when Japan surrendered, and when they captured Saddam Hussein.

Where to start?

- As bad as he was, Saddam Hussein wasn't Hitler
- As bad as he was, Saddam Hussein wasn't Tojo
- As bad as he was, Zarqawi wasn't Hitler
- As bad as he was, Zarqawi wasn't Tojo
- But most importantly: the invasion and occupation of Iraq is in no way, shape or form comparable to World War II.

Period!

Dear editors of TIME magazine: comparing the current conflict in Iraq to WWII is not only a historical atrocity, but it cheapens the sacrifice of the nearly 400,000 Americans who gave their lives to stop the tyranny of fascist regimes from taking over the globe and exterminating entire nations. The same goes for the millions of victims of those regimes that the allies rightfully defeated. Not only your TIME cover is propaganda, and cheap to boot, but an INSULT to the truth and to our historical heritage.

But again, we are getting closer to the midterm elections, and it's getting very difficult to have Bush strutting on a carrier with his flysuit. TIME will take of the propaganda, comparing Iraq to WWII whenever they want to.

Again, this is the same magazine that decided to turn Ann Coulter into a "respectable" figure, so yes, they certainly are deep in right-wing rhetoric and propaganda.

Victimized by the Nazis. Now I just call it stupidity and disconnection from reality.

5. I must have missed the Zarqawi death camps
Or the Zarqawi crematoriums.

Or the Zarqawi Death Marches.

Or the Zarqawi Poison Gas Attacks.

Does anyone have an exact Musab al-Zarqawi death toll???

Because I've never seen one.

This is definitely overemphasizing a rather goofy figure IMHO.

9. Remember: elections coming soon
The neocons need to parade this military success and aggrandize it.

As I said, Rove can't put Bush in a flysuit to strut on a carrier anymore. Rove will need to emphasize anything else, and hide the catastrophic results of this administration on just about everything else.

12. This is why I will never spend one red cent or other
purchase revenue that I have on any of those magazines in the future. I was forced to subscribe to Time when I was in high school supposedly so I could learn about current events. Back then there was some journalistic integrity but not today.

20. I believe that your post illistrates a portion of their motivation
Of course there is the more obvious pre-election rah-rah bs. But I think that it also serves as the double speak that oozes out of every nook & cranny of the bush* admin & all of those who gain from them being in power. By conflating Saddam or Z with the fascists of WWII, it takes attention away from all atrocities being committed by this administration.

Torture, death squads, renditions, massacres? Ah, don't worry about that stuff--we're the good guys, we're fighting the fascists. BTW, you aren't using your civil liberties, are you? We may need to borrow them for a while so can keep the fascists from coming over here and taking your freedom.

23. It's a shareholder problem
Shareholders want instant results and maximum readership, forcing the editors to use their best ammo inappropriately.

Also TIME was probably worried another magazine would use the X image, so they did it first. Preemptive over-hyping.

They are cheapening our own historical references in order to aggrandize the figure of Zarqawi, on behalf of the Bush admin.

Pre-electoral propaganda at its worst.

26. IDK
until I read what they say the cover itself may not mean much. You could use an over inflated cover like that to attract readers to a story that talks about how insignificant Zarqawi really was. Which wouldn't be bad at all.
