Iraq: 70,000 forces to hit streets of Baghdad
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/06/13/iraq.main/index.html

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- At least 70,000 coalition forces -- most of them Iraqi -- will be deployed on the streets of Baghdad Wednesday morning in a massive effort to bring security to the Iraqi capital, according to the Iraqi prime minister's office.

The troops will include Iraqi police, police commandos, soldiers and emergency police, as well as coalition forces, the office said.

They will enforce checkpoints on Baghdad's roads, as well as a 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew.

The forces will wear new uniforms to distinguish them from insurgents who wear fake uniforms to carry out attacks.

Maybe this will help Iraq turn another corner and turn the tide and make progress and ....

1. Uh, new uniforms?
Yeah, for about the first two minutes they're out wearing them. Then the uniforms can be reproduced at will by terrorist factions.

Don't reporters EVER think anymore?

As for the main thrust of the news item, it's a potentially good step...but I expect problems with loyalties and infiltrations will crop up. Then there's the bad rep Iraqi troops already have among the civilian population due to the ugly joint raids they've been carrying out with US forces. And they'll be targets for any groups vying for political control, just like US troops.

They're brave, I'll give them that. I hope those who are genuinely serving for their country's sake, and are on the side of true justice, prevail.

2. Just look at that article from yesterday about massive desertions

You're right. In a matter of days the corruption and infiltration of the Iraqi security forces will have these new uniforms in the hands of insurgents and terrorists.

Ah, here's that article:
